Movement in the Park – an HAL initiative – encompasses all those goals through adaptive fitness classes in the local community. And now, after four successful years, Movement in the Park is expanding its services.
In addition to our regular three-class schedule in which community members come to us, we are now offering more sessions in which we take Movement in the Park to the community!
Our student instructors have partnered with Vandal QUEST, Milestone Decisions, Inc and Opportunities Unlimited (OUI) to offer a weekly session at the University of Idaho campus, a Milestone’s house and an OUI day program.
With this trial, not only have our instructors expanded services, but they have also proven the Movement in the Park model to be a flexible and accommodating program that can be shared and scaled to suit communities of any size and in any location. These partnerships double our schedule and take classes directly to participants. It opens the door to even more opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to take part in healthy, accessible activity.
All adults, regardless of their ability and fitness level, are encouraged to attend. Each session is free, runs for approximately 25 minutes, and focuses on arms, legs, core and cardio. The structure helps participants meet the CDC physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes per week of moderate to vigorous physical activity.
Exercises and activities covered in each session can be modified, with adaptive alternatives offered by our student instructors. Participants enjoy a fun and supportive environment that allows personal autonomy over their bodies and activity options individualized to their specific needs.
Classes will carry on through the end of the academic year before we switch to our streamlined summer schedule. Next fall, all Movement in the Park classes will return, with plans to possibly expand even more.
