In Memoriam

Cortney Foster, CPA

Treasurer, NACM Business Credit Services

2012-2024

Our association is grieving the loss of our Treasurer for the past 12 years, Cortney Foster. Courtney passed away on March 24th after a brief illness. During his service to NACM, Courtney brought his strong analytical and business sense to bear on strengthening our financial condition. His most significant accomplishments included managing the financial transaction surrounding the 2014 sale of our downtown office building, careful oversight of our investments, and successfully managing our financial position during the pandemic to ensure we are in the strongest financial condition of our 125 years.

In addition to serving NACM, he was also managing partner of Foster + Company CPAs. The firm had an extensive background in technology start-up and emerging growth companies. He had broad experience with mergers, acquisitions and corporate restructuring. He was a graduate of Central Washington University and received his CPA certification from Washington State University.

Cortney made his home on Vashon Island with his partner Michelle Cody and three children, two dogs, and countless chickens.

His passing is deeply felt by all of his NACM colleagues. We mourn his loss as of one of the good guys who made such a positive difference in the lives of others. We extend our condolences and best wishes to his family.

Electricity production at PNW dams drops to lowest level in two decades

Hydroelectric power generated from Pacific Northwest dams fell to a 22-year low between October 2022 and September 2023, a new federal report says. In Washington, dams generated 23% less power than the year before. The Washington State Standard has a full report

  • Below average precipitation and a heat wave in May 2023 were to blame for the lower than normal hydropower production, the report said

Prediction for 2024: Experts expect hydropower production across the Western states to fall another 12% from 2023.

Rising demand: The decline in hydropower production comes as electricity demand is surging due to the electrification of transportation, manufacturing and homes, along with the construction of new data centers.

Electricity demand In the Pacific Northwest is expected to rise 25% over the next decade.

What you need to know for tax season

Filing your tax return serves as an annual reminder of just how tediously complex the American tax code is, and this year is no exception.

It’s not as messy as the pandemic years, but there are plenty of new provisions taking effect, and some changes could potentially land midseason.

Visa, Mastercard credit-card settlement could save businesses billions

Credit-card giants Visa Inc. and Mastercard Inc. have agreed to a settlement in a long-running lawsuit over credit-card swipe fees — and businesses could save billions of dollars a year.

The settlement, valued at nearly $30 billion in combined savings on fees, is the latest in a long-running series of combined lawsuits dating back to 2005, and must still be approved by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. It covers all merchants who accepted Visa or Mastercard debit or credit cards in the United States from Dec. 18, 2020, to when the settlement is ultimately finalized.
