From the Rector
At our Lord’s final post-resurrection appearance, he instructs his disciples, “everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled… Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” He then leads them out of Jerusalem to Bethany – the village on the Mount of Olives where expectant crowds waved palm branches and acclaimed him as king – where now our Lord’s triumphal entry is completed by his triumphal exit into heaven.
As our Lord ascends into heaven, he raises his hands and blesses the disciples, like Aaron the priest, who “raised his hands over the people and blessed them...” Our Lord’s final, physical act as he departs this earth is a ritual blessing; and since that first Ascension Day, the act of blessing – making and recognizing the sacred in the world – has been part of the Church’s ministry.
As our Feast of Title, the Ascension of our Lord serves as a wonderful, visual reminder that our charge as a parish is to offer God’s blessing to all who walk through our doors, and those who pass by them, in need of solace and strength. All of us are in need of God’s blessing, mercy, and grace – which we receive week after week, day after day, in the holy sacrifice of the Mass and in the Sacraments of the Church. My hope for us this Ascension Day is that our holy day observances and our participation in the sacred mysteries will further ground us in the charge to offer God’s blessing to all people, beginning on the corner of N LaSalle and Elm.

Education for Ministry Open House
Interested in deepening your relationship with God? Want to study scripture with other committed people? Looking for an intimate intentional spiritual community? Seeking a better understanding of how to live a faithful life in today’s world?
Education for Ministry is a program of small-group adult formation developed by the
School of Theology at the University of the South, designed to help us prepare for the
ministry we are all called to as Christians. There are EfM groups across the country
that meet weekly to pursue a structured curriculum with an agenda that includes
worship, study, reflection and shared community. A group that will meet nearby at St.
James Cathedral is forming.
If you would like to learn more, you’re warmly invited to attend an Open House of an
existing Education for Ministry group to experience a session on Wednesday, May 15, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 939 Hinman, Evanston. Please contact Laura Jenkins (laura.m.jenkins@icloud.com or 312-282-9664) for more information or to register for this session.

Consider being a Coffee Hour host
There are spots available for hosting Coffee Hour after either Sunday Mass! Look for the JULY & AUGUST sign-up sheets in Wheeler Hall.
If you are leary of what hosting a Coffee Hour might entail, speak to Hospitality Committee members Josh or Ellie Simpson, David Reeves, LaVerne Saunders or Carol Noren. They will be glad to help.

The Prayers of the People
As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre or Mother Murphy-Gill. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.
Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
