Susan B. Anthony Brings the National American Woman Suffrage Association to Grand Rapids by Melissa Fox March 12th, 1pm, Lowell Township Hall 2910 Alden Nash SE

Join us for tea in Lowell! Susan B. Anthony visited Grand Rapids several times before the 1899 National American Woman Suffrage Associate Convention. She spent time campaigning in Michigan during the 1870’s and attended Michigan state suffrage meetings, four of which were hosted in Grand Rapids. Our own local suffrage leader, Emily Burton Ketcham, developed a lasting friendship with Susan B. Anthony, so much so that Anthony attended Ketcham’s 25th wedding anniversary in 1892 with, as the Grand Rapids Herald reported, “all the grace and polish of a reigning society queen.” Melissa Fox will consider what brought Susan B. Anthony to Grand Rapids, what other well-known suffragists (both local and national) joined her, the excitement in and around the annual convention, and how West Michigan came to host it.  This event is free & open to the public!
