Weekly Update

A Message from Principal Simpson

Diana

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 13th year of Ben Franklin Academy! We are so excited your family is a part of our community. During our 13th-year celebration, we will be focusing on our school's mission and vision:

  • BFA's mission is: to develop young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
  • Our vision is: Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, the arts, and literacy. We will be a data-driven institution focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering social-emotional development, character, sports, and nature.

One of the many ways that the staff and leaders are accountable to our community relates to safety. As you saw in an email from BFA Board President, Mrs. Maglieri, during the summer, BFA's Board and Administration worked hard last spring to secure a full-time SRO for our school. It is my pleasure to introduce Deputy Shannon Jensen (pictured below).

Deputy Shannon Jensen is an experienced and accomplished School Resource Officer (SRO) with 14 years of law enforcement experience. She obtained her undergraduate degree and Doctor of Law in Northern California, where she also began her law enforcement career before moving to Colorado with her family. Deputy Jensen has been with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office for eight years and has had various assignments, including serving the community as a cold case detective. After solving a 40-year-old Colorado cold case, she was featured on Dateline NBC and People Magazine Investigates. Deputy Jensen graduated from the National Association of School Resource Officers Basic and Advanced School Resource Officer courses. She also was recently recognized as a NASRO practitioner, which requires years of training and service as a school resource officer. When she's not in uniform, you can find Deputy Jensen exploring the outdoors, soaking in Colorado hot springs, cheering on her favorite baseball team, or enjoying a concert at Red Rocks.

When asked to describe what her BFA SRO role entails, she said:

As a school resource officer, I am responsible for school safety and crime prevention. I work closely with school administrators to ensure each student has a safe and productive learning environment. You will find me walking the hallways, visiting with staff and students, patrolling the school's exterior, checking the doors, and making sure they are closed and locked. Your student's safety is as important to me as if they were my own children.

It is also my mission to get to know my students and to develop meaningful relationships with them to help them grow and reach their highest potential. My goal is to be a role model for students and someone they trust and can come to for guidance and support. My office will always be open to them to talk about what's going on in their lives or to discuss something before it becomes a bigger

issue.

I love getting into the classroom to connect with students. I enjoy reading to them, talking about the role of a police officer, showing them my equipment, or educating them on safety and other age-appropriate issues. I have been known to play dodgeball, four square, or shoot hoops with students.

I am excited to be a part of the community here at Ben Franklin Academy. I already know many students and look forward to getting to know them better and learning about the students I haven't met yet. I am honored to serve as the first dedicated school resource officer at Ben Franklin Academy!

Please join me in welcoming Deputy Jensen to our community! We are so excited that she is here!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Simpson

Jensen

Welcome Deputy Shannon Jensen!

Volunteer Recognition

Thank You Keri and Jason Street!

Monte Brook, our Facilities Manger, wants to give a special shout out to Keri and Jason Street for all the volunteer work they did this summer. The stairway railings throughout the building were chipping paint and constantly looked dirty because of the way they were originally manufactured. The solution to this problem was time consuming and very costly, but Keri and Jason Street offered to take it on! Jason Street brought in a team to take off the stair rails, hauled them to Commerce City, powder coated all the railings, then he and his crew welded them back into place. They look fantastic, and more importantly, they’ll be durable and keep our students and teachers safe for a long time to come!

The school paid for the powder coating, but the Street family volunteered considerable time and labor (including the team of helpers), which resulted in cost savings for our school. Keri and Jason already volunteer quite a bit as a family, and we’re extremely grateful for their continued support of our students and our school. THANK YOU!

Please remember your driver's license when you come to the school to pick up your student early, volunteer or attend a meeting at school. For safety reasons, every person who enters the school needs to have their Driver's License available to be scanned. Please keep in mind, this is also a requirement for any other family members who would like to enter the school. Thanks for helping us keep our kids safe!
