Every day that I come to work I feel compelled to make a quick mental note of thanks and appreciation for the people around me and for how fortunate I am to be in a leadership role representing just shy of 1000 companies here in the airport area. I reflect on where I grew up, in a small New Jersey town, waking up each morning to see my father catch the train to Manhattan which he did with others on our street for over 30 years. My father was the ultimate mentor. One who immigrated from Germany, worked his way up the corporate ladder and never missed an opportunity to thank those around him for giving him the opportunity in this incredible country of ours.
To this day, my thoughts are with him and his humble approach to life, love and leadership. He led with passion and conviction and always bestowed on us to care for and accept those who might look, speak, or act different from us no matter what. As we enter the season of thanks and gratitude, I want to make sure that as a leader, a father and husband I am thankful for my employees, our colleagues and Chamber members, and for my family who I admire and hope to set a positive message of gratefulness just as my father did with us.
To those leaders, reading this message today, as a good friend recently cited, remember, leaders are only defined by their followers-and exist of no value when leading an empty room. I reflect to the term of being “relevant” in everything we do. We are all special and, in many ways, relevant in our work and with our families. The Pittsburgh airport area, the region we serve, live, work and play is a special place because of you and your leadership, your relevance, and your passion to do better. From all of us here at the Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber of Commerce be thankful, continue to build everyday day and the warmest of holiday greetings to you and yours!
