2022 Roadworks Paving Contract Award
|
|
The 2022 Roadworks Asphalt Contract (consists of asphalt overlays, drainage and adjacent cement work - sidewalks/curb/gutter) has been awarded to Terus Construction (DGS Astro Paving) in the amount of $5,201,564.53,
The budgeted amount includes carry-forward budget from 2020/2021 as the contractor was unable to complete the work prior to the beginning of the winter season. This year's work plan includes renewal areas that were deferred from 2020 and 2021, as well as areas identified and scheduled for the 2022 construction season.

2022 Third Quarter Grant-in-Aid Applications Approved
|
The Regional Council approved four applications for the 2022 Third Quarter Grant-in-Aid applications for the $1,000 maximum amount.
- Fort Nelson Hospice Society: "Rage Room" fundraiser event
- Fort Nelson Motocross Club: Peace Motocross Association Motocross Race
- Miss Katie June's "Bee Yourself" Rotary Spray Park: 1st Annual "Bee Yourself" Party/Matinee Movie
- North Paw Animal Rescue: Veterinary spay and neuter program

Zoning Amendment: 4804 - 50th Avenue N (Dowd)

Be sure to make the articles The proposed zoning amendment is to revise Northern Rockies Regional Municipality Zoning Bylaw No. 119, 2016, by designating the property located at 4804 50th Ave N from the current zoning of C-6 Service Station Commercial to C-2 Highway Commercial to accommodate a potential development.
Council has given the amendment bylaw three readings, with the final adoption subject to prior approval by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI). A Public Hearing was held before this May 24 Council Meeting with no members of the public submitting comments.

Tourism Week
May 29, 2022-June 4, 2022

Executive Director of the Fort Nelson Visitor Information Centre discussed activities that were happening for Tourism Week, including an Open House May 29 from 1-4pm, Trivia Contest and Colouring Contest.
Ms. Vandersteen also presented visitor statistics for the 2022 year-to-date compared to past years. She noted the effect that the pandemic had on visitor numbers and that we appear to be recovering this year.

Community Recognition of Streeper Kennels
Local resident Ms. Brenda Enax made a heartfelt presentation (starts minute 9:56 of recording) regarding the contributions that the Streeper family has made to the dogsledding world. As residents that have become world-renowned for their dogsled racing ability, Ms. Enax would like to see recognition, perhaps in the form of community welcome signage. Staff will be reporting to Council regarding recognition procedures in other municipalities, and options going forward, including the availability of grant funding.
2022 Tourism Budget Reallocation
At the May 9th, 2022 Council meeting, the 2022 North Eastern BC Tourism Marketing Co-Op contribution was reduced from $12,000 to $7,000. The remaining $5,000 will be reallocated to the operational tourism marketing budget. This year, marketing opportunities have arisen that were not anticipated, such as a potential partnership on 2 episodes on the Fish'n Canada TV Show. Administration Report #42/22
- The 44th Street Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Tender has been cancelled.
- The Northern Rockies received a Tu Deh-Kah Geothermal Support Letter - BC Clean Communities Fund.

The Province has been exploring opportunities to modernize the forest sector in B.C., including the intent to revise area-based, tenure-specific pricing policy, which is of particular concern to the NRRM.
The NRRM's application has been approved for a rebate grant up to $8,000 toward a community grant writing position during the 2022 calendar year. This funding has contributed to the position for several years with great success.
