March 2023 | Issue 27

From My Desk to Your Inbox

As we move into March, we look forward to Daylights Savings time, St. Patrick’s Day, March Madness, and the first day of Spring. For most homeowners, Spring also includes spring “clean-up” projects in and outside our homes. As a reminder, you may place yard waste in your 96-gallon refuse cart, and any excess should be placed in 30-gallon bags. Bulk items such as large appliances, furniture, and carpet can be set out on your regular collection day. Mattresses must be wrapped and sealed in plastic. We can all do our part to keep Mayfield Heights looking great, like the vibrant city it is.

We are in the process of renovating the Police Department lobby and dispatch center. The project should be completed in a couple of weeks. The dispatch center was outfitted with new equipment and space, allowing for improved and more efficient communication.

I drive past the Aquatic and Community Center every day. Each time I am amazed at the progress. Multiple tradesmen are on-site daily, all with the same purpose of building this magnificent center. Framing for the community center and gymnasium has been completed, and interior framing will begin soon. It is amazing to see the progressive transformation. Check out the website and read Sean Ward’s blog to keep informed with project updates.

Enjoy the month of March!

C.A.T.S. Academy

(Citizens Academy for Teenage Students)

C.A.T.S. Academy is a teen police academy modeled after the successful adult Citizens' Police Academy. The teen academy is intended for young men and women that have an interest in a career in law enforcement or have an interest in learning why and how police officers serve their community.

C.A.T.S. Academy allows students to take a look behind-the-scenes of the Police Department and allows our officers to interact and build positive relationships with the teens residing in the Mayfield School District. This year's academy will be held May 20-21, 2023. Take advantage of this great opportunity for your teen! Sign up here for C.A.T.S. Academy. This is a FREE program!

Citizen's Police Academy

The Citizen Police Academy is a look into the philosophy and operations of the Mayfield Heights Police Department. Designed for Citizens of Mayfield Heights, the Academy educates citizens about the “hows” and “whys” of the agency and law enforcement in general and the citizen’s role in the community-oriented policing philosophy. A wide variety of topics are included in the Academy. We cover topics such as Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Traffic Accidents, SWAT, NARC, Bomb Squad, Hostage Negotiators, Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Mock Court, Airsoft Range, and much more!

Various members of MHPD will serve as instructors. If you are 21 years of age or older, a Mayfield Heights resident or employed in the City of Mayfield Heights, and are able to commit to attending the eight (8) week course, don't miss out on signing up for the Citizen's Police Academy. Although the 2023 Academy is full, we are taking applications for the 2024 Academy here.

Street Sweeper and Chipper

Due to the extremely nice weather we have been experiencing; we were able to send our street sweeper out. The entire city has been swept. Additionally, we have had the opportunity to send out our chipper truck to collect any brush or twigs throughout the city that may have been put out over the winter months. Typically the chipper is used once the snow season is almost over. We have been fortunate this year that the crews can get out to street sweep and start chipping.

Cold Patch - Pothole Filling

Tis the season for cold patching. Crews have been out daily cold patching potholes. Please remember to contact the Service Department to report a pothole at 440.442.2629. To report any damage to a vehicle due to a pothole on city streets, contact the Police Department at 440.442.2323.
