From Bishop White: Katie Forsyth Named Canon for Communications

June 5, 2024

Dear People of God in the Diocese of Southern Ohio:

I have good news to share! Katie Forsyth—an experienced and talented communicator and faithful Episcopalian—will become canon for communications in our diocese on August 1.

Katie comes to us from the Episcopal Dioceses of Eastern and Western Michigan (soon to be the Episcopal Diocese of the Great Lakes) where she served first as director of communications and public engagement in Eastern Michigan and then as canon for evangelism and networking in both dioceses. During her eleven years in Michigan, she has helped lead through times of significant change, creating print and online communications that have drawn people together and helped them imagine God’s vision for the future. Katie is also a leader among Episcopal Church communicators and has contributed her considerable skill to a number of provincial and churchwide projects and efforts.

Dr. James Allsop, former president of the Standing Committee and a member of St. Simon of Cyrene, Cincinnati, and the Rev. Gia Hayes-Martin of St. John’s, Worthington, joined me for interviews during the communications hiring process. And during her visit to the diocese, Katie met with a group of staff and with the Rev. Meredith Day Hearn, a member of the Standing Committee and priest-in-charge of All Saints, Cincinnati. We all agreed unanimously that she was the ideal person to help us address the internal and external communications needs identified by the recent Ministry Architects listening sessions, communicate our vision, and share the stories of our congregations and faith communities across the diocese.

Katie, who holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and non-profit administration from Grand Valley State University, will soon be moving from Grand Rapids, Michigan to the Cincinnati area. When she begins work later this summer, she will report directly to me and be a valued part of our senior staff.

With this new addition to our staff comes the opportunity to invest even more fully in sharing God’s love with communities across our region. I am delighted to say that Canon Julie Murray will help lead that work as our new canon for community engagement, a role that will allow her to focus even more of her time and skill on our diocesan presence at Pride celebrations across the region, on diocesan convention, and on other opportunities to share God’s love in our communities. I celebrate this opportunity for Julie’s long experience and many relationships in our diocese to benefit our public ministry even more fully.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support as we move forward together in ministry.

In Christ,

The Rt. Rev. Kristin Uffelman White

Bishop
