FRAMEABLE MOMENTS WITH
LARRY CHEN

"The 2024 Pikes Peak Hill Climb week was incredibly tough. The weather, as always, did not cooperate so we were unable to get so many staple shots that we look forward to every year. On the other hand, it was nice to be able to get shots in the fog to show the mountain and the race in a completely different way. It's something I look forward to every single year, and even though it's the same strip of road, we find new and interesting shots. I could shoot there for the rest of my life."

History of Race Dates on Pikes Peak | |
|
The first race on the mountain was the creation of Colorado Springs businessman and visionary, Spencer Penrose. "The Pikes Peak National Hill Climbing Contest" was run over three days on August 10, 11 and 12, 1916.
Racing was halted on the mountain from 1917 through 1919 while WWI raged. When the war ended, drivers and fans were eager to return to the famous mountain. From 1920 through 1955, with the exception of 1942-1945 when WWII was being fought and no races were held, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb was held on Labor Day weekend.
| |
In 1956, a shift was made to celebrate Independence Day by staging the race on that day, a tradition that continued for 11 years. In the late 1960s, the race was moved to the end of June, and in 1970 it returned to the Fourth of July for one year. It was held on the 11th of July in 1971 and then transitioned back to the 4th through 1982.
From 1983 through 1991, various dates in July welcomed the race, and in 1991 it returned to the Fourth of July where it stayed through 2000.
| |
|
Since the new millennium, the race has been held 18 times in June, four times in July and twice in August due to postponements - once for a wildfire, and once for the pandemic.
For 33 years it was held on the Fourth of July, and for 32 years it was hosted on Labor Day weekend. There have been 21 races in June, 13 on other dates in July, and three races in August totaling 102 runnings! And it seems that no matter the month, day or year, the mountain and the weather have the final say on race day conditions.

Meet Jim Jordan
PPIHC Board of Directors
"I have been actively involved in Motorsports for 50 years, since I started pit crewing for a racer when I was 17 years old. I attended my first car race of any sort with my dad when I was nine, and saw Mario Andretti win a race at the Trenton Speedway in New Jersey. After reading an article in Sports Illustrated, I became aware of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The pictures of one of the Unsers kicking up dirt in a sprint car left me in awe.
I am not sure many locals really understand how respected the Pikes Peak Hill Climb is around the world. It is one of the most famous races ever, and getting to serve on the Board of Directors and try to help the event survive and thrive is a dream come true. This race is a great demonstration platform for technology. This was a really exciting year to be involved with the new GT4 classes competing."

From Pikes Peak to West Sussex, England - Congratulations 2024 PPIHC King of the Mountain, Romain Dumas, on your third win at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 14. Dumas won the Pikes Peak Open division in 2023 in the Ford SuperVan.
Tom Howard, writing for Motorsport.com observed, "Dumas lit up Goodwood’s famous 1.16-mile hillclimb course to post a 43.987s effort behind the wheel of the Ford SuperVan 4.2, which can generate 1400 horsepower from its four electric motors.
The time managed to eclipse former Formula 1 driver Scott Speed, who had laid down a 46.075s effort, piloting a modified 670 horsepower Subaru WRX - Project Midnight, which had been created specifically for this event."
