The weather is warming and that means that the amphibians that make their home in Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park are starting to stir.
Amphibians that have been in their winter hibernation sites are soon going to be moving to their spring breeding sites.
We are looking for volunteers to help out with a fun and unusual project.
Sometime over the next week or two, as the amphibians make their move, we are planning to go out to do a count of how many and what kinds of amphibians we have here. This takes place around 9:00 at night. We will count them and help them as they cross the road to their vernal breeding pools. We will do this on Scout Road and maybe at one or more additional locations depending on the number of volunteers that we have. We expect to find spring peepers, green frogs, wood frogs, grey tree frogs, american toads, yellow spotted salamanders, red backed salamanders, maybe even four toed salamanders (like the ones pictured above) or spadefoot toads.
We are looking for volunteers to be on call to come at a moment's notice when we get the word from our friend, naturalist Kenny Barnett that they are out and about. We will then get our assignments and meet at the Preserve & Park to do the count.
If you would like to be involved, please send an email to Margo Olson at mbolson@wiltonpreserve.org and let me know that you are interested and please, also give a phone number that you can be reached at around 9:00 at night.
