FARBER STANDS WITH ISRAEL

While there has been a lot of learning at Farber since Simchat Torah, there has been a lot of davening, making cards, signs and videos for chayalim and their families. The Bnot Sherut have been creating many opportunities to help us stay connected to Israel and to the chayalim. In school, we had a beautiful program with Tehilim and songs led by Rabbi Moshe and Shayna Davis, the Bnot Sherut, and the Hebrew Department. We have worn blue and white and we have connected with our friends, alumni, and students who are in Israel right now. Our High Schoolers joined with almost 10,000 other students at 45 other schools around the country to say Tehillim and sing Acheinu and Hatikvah together. We are consistently showing that Farber Stands with Israel!!

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dr. Josh Levisohn

These past weeks have been some of the toughest weeks for Jews in the last fifty years. We are all worried about our family and friends in Israel or serving in the IDF and concerned about the impact it has on Israel’s present and future.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dr. Nathan Gonik

To the Farber Family,

Over the past several weeks, I have found it hard to focus on much of anything. It all seems so trivial compared to the devastation we have seen befall our friends, family and the entire Am Yisroel at the hands of Hamas.  I was able to achieve a little clarity when I recently davenned shacharit with the high-school. We said Avinu Malkeinu, several pereks of Tehillim and a heartfelt Mi’shebeyrach for the hostages and army.

RABBI ELIEZER COHEN Z"L

On September 11th, we remembered a great teacher, Rabbi Eliezer Cohen z”l on his yahrtzeit. Rabbi Leib introduced the yearly Memorial Program where the students learn Mishnayot related to Rosh Hashanah. Rabbi Noam Koenigsberg, a Farber/Yeshivat Akiva alum and student of Rabbi Cohen z"l, currently a rabbi at Yeshivat Shalavim, shared some of the ways that Rabbi Cohen z”l had influenced him. Rabbi Cohen z”l lived by כי הם חיינו and wanted his students to learn without having to worry about grades or effecting their GPA and that Torah study is a lifelong endeavor . He also shared that Rabbi Cohen z”l instilled confidence in his students which Rabbi Koenigsberg greatly valued. Finally, Rabbi Koenigsberg shared that one of his main memories of Rabbi Cohen z”l was the seriousness with which he took Tefillah, and how he was always on time for Davening, like an עבד in front of the King, with his Tallis and Tefillin. We were honoured to have Rebbetzin Cohen and Goldie Cohen here to help us remember Rabbi Cohen z”l. יהי זיכרו ברוך

WE WERE HAPPY TO WELCOME TO FARBER THE FOLLOWING UNIVERSITIES AND THEIR REPRESENTATIVES

WE WELCOMED OVER 20 NEW FAMILIES TO FARBER THIS YEAR!

Moshe and Jenna Sendler are the parents of Ayelet (Toddler class). Jenna is from Ottawa, Canada, while Moshe grew up in Detroit.

The Sendlers enjoy visiting the local parks, trails and museums. They are excited for Ayelet to meet new friends at Farber and learn to walk!

Aliza and Ira Tick are the parents of Gavi (Nursery 2) and baby Ari. Aliza is an Akiva alumna! The Ticks are very excited for Gavi to be in a Jewish environment. He loves Torah, Shabbos, and tzedaka and it's so amazing to know that he's in an environment that will nurture those interests.

The Tick family likes to take "adventures" to different attractions, to make breakfast and eat as a family and to visit Bubbie and Zayde

Tzippy and Dov Brenner are the parents of Ephraim, a third grader at Farber. They recently moved from West Hempstead, New York and are big Yankees fans! Dov is a resident at Garden City Hospital and Tzippy works at Farber. They are excited to be a part of the Farber community!

Sam and Jenna Englender are the parents of Maya (K), Esti (Nursery 3), and Akiva (Toddler class).

On Sundays you can find them taking trips to the library and hanging out with grandparents. The Englenders are excited about their kids making friends and growing their passion for Torah and Jewish life at Farber.

Tali and Joseph Sowalsky are the parents of Benjamin (Toddler class). Tali, who grew up in Montreal, and Joseph, who is from Connecticut, met at Yeshiva University and moved to Michigan 2 years ago. A favoriate activity for their family is visiting splash pads and parks.

They are excited for Benjamin to begin his Jewish education at Farber. The Sowalskys are joining family here at school: Benjamin's cousins, Aderet and Micah Lonn are also Farber students!

Liat and Yaniv Feldman are the parents of Ori (11th grade) and two daughters, Noga and Hadar.

Chanan Tzvi and Becky Maister are the parents of Chana Chaya (Nursery 2) and baby Mozy. They just moved into a new house during the first week of school and are excited to get to know their new neighbors and new neighborhood! They enjoy visiting the zoo as a family!

The Maisters are eager for Chana to begin learning Hebrew at Farber.

Chana and Eitan Neubauer are the parents of Erez (K), Roei (Nursery 2) , and Baby Nave. They recently arrived from Israel as shlichim and can't wait to get to know everyone in our community. Chana teaches middle and high school Chumash and Ivrit at Farber and the kids are already starting to love their new friends. The Neubauers welcome suggestions for fun family activities around town.

Rabbi Moshe and Shayna Davis are the parents of Shira (Toddler class) and are Farber's Bnei Akiva Shlichim beginning their second year here.

Moshe's great- grandfather David Tanzman was one of the founders of Yeshivat Akiva and while Moshe's grandmother did not attend Akiva, her younger brother (Moshe's great-uncle) was in the first graduating class.

The Davises' favorite Sunday activities are Bnei Akiva events! They are excited that Shira has officially joined the Farber family!

Tova and Jesse Ackler are the parents of Josh and Lily, new Farber Nursery 2 students, and David (YBY). They are excited for their twins to be aorund other kids their age and to enjoy being in a classroom.

The Acklers, native New Yorkers, have 5 pets: a dog and 4 black cats. Jesse works for GM and Tova is a parapro at Farber in the ECC and absolutely loves her job!!

FARBER BASKETBALL SEASON

IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!!

1) Name: Rabbi Nati Faber

2) Year of Graduation: 2016 - 5776

3) Current Professional Position: Formerly Mazkir Artzi (Program Director) of Bnei Akiva of the US and Canada, now focusing on my academic career in Linguistics and Sociology (with teaching middle school Tanakh on the side)

4) What is your greatest professional accomplishment?  In college, I did seminar work on the topic of the history of Henry VIII’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon. That year, the Arundel Estate published a manuscript of a Shut (Responsum) that a Rabbi from Venice wrote to the King, addressing if the King had Halachic grounds for an annulment. Being that the manuscript was newly published and it’s a niche area of study, I published the only annotated transcription of the manuscript. The significance of my work is that it contributes to reclaiming our history and the role we played in the Renaissance, which has long been forgotten from world history.

5) What is your favorite Farber/Akiva memory? There are so many to choose from, but I would have to say that when I was in 9th grade, it was the first year ever we did Rosh Chodesh Adar dancing with Darkhei Torah. A few us went over and started dancing in the parking lot outside, got invited in, and went around each classroom dancing with the kids. I’m not sure if the legacy lived on, but it was great moment.

6) Who influenced you the most during your time at Farber/Akiva? It’s so hard to choose, but I would say either Rabbi Eliezer Cohen or Rabbi Asher Nemes. Rabbi Cohen taught me what it means to have strong Jewish identity built on critical engagement. Rabbi Nemes has taught me basically all of the building blocks to my Torah knowledge.

7) What is something you learned at Farber/Akiva that helped get you where you are today? Shout out to Morah Chana who taught me my first Hebrew sentences in 1st grade— without that, I don’t think I would have been able to finish Smikha

I exist in 2 very different worlds: community work and academia; and in both I often think back to the Akiva education I received. Community involvement, locally, in Israel, and worldwide, was something that was taught to be second nature at Akiva. I have so many past Akiva schoolmates that have been volunteering (either signing up for Milluim or going around the country providing goods and services), without a second thought, because that’s what we were taught to do.

In my academic career, while I often think about things I learned in my 15 year tenure at Akiva, I also appreciate how I learned how to think critically and meaningfully about the world, probably the most useful skill in that setting.
