Friendly Harbor Community Center

Friendly Harbor Community Center promotes wellness and recovery from mental health

and substance issues by providing a safe environment and connecting people

to healthy relationships and organizations through Peer Support.

A Big Thank YOU!

Through the power of our wonderful volunteers and community,

we are happy to share that we received a grill donation after our last newsletter!

Larry from Lowe's brought us a mighty grill indeed!

A big thank you to Theresa Kosack for the assistance in making the connection.

Friendly Harbor is unique among peer organizations in Pueblo. Our Peers go

between services and organizations that, at times, lose people in the shuffle as

they're navigating life. At the Harbor, we strive to reach folks who might otherwise

fall through the cracks of the system or from their own limitations. We value each

person living to their fullest potential at any given moment. If you'd like to support

our mission, have confidence that you are helping further our reach and abilities

so that one day no one might feel alone in their recovery.

Meet Our Team!

Welcome Marcie Story, our newest hire!

Born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado Marcie has prior experience working at the Pueblo Soup Kitchen and wanted to take it a step further to become a Peer and help others who have been in similar situations. She enjoys the gems Pueblo has to offer like football games, the State Fair and the Chile and Frijole Festival. Outside of peer work she likes to get outside; hiking, camping, and being in the mountains especially. When asked what recovery means to her Marcie said, “Recovery is everything to me! It saved my life and made me realize there are others out there who are willing to help you and walk alongside you to get you back on track. I love that my children get to see me in recovery and know that anything is possible if you are willing to put in the hard work.” and she wants others to know, “Just because you have made a mistake, it doesn’t define you who you are or who you can become. Recovery is not linear and it’s not a cookie cutter process for everyone. It’s not the end of the world if you mess up. Just get back up and try again. We get that chance every single day.”

Group of the Month

Suicide Alternatives Support

Each Tuesday Bill Wuest leads a group in discussing their experiences with suicidal thoughts, attempts and alternatives to action. Bill shares his experience with these as well and creates a space of mutual respect and understanding so that no one might fear discussing these, at times difficult to discuss, topics. The the group attempts to emphasize confidentiality and personal expression in a safe space that leaves you knowing it’s okay not to be okay.

Upcoming Event!

With three successful barbecues already this year, we invite you to mark your calendars for our last barbeque party and Volunteer Recognition Open House!

Sept. 21st, 12 pm - 2 pm

Join us and friends and neighbors for an afternoon of good food, games and more. Our barbeques are always free and open to the public.

In The Community

Each year a sober tent at the State Fair has brought together Peer organizations to show recovery is possible and worth showing up and out for. The sober tent is hosted by the Pueblo Community Peer Pod, which meets once a month to discuss what our organizations have going on and share information and resources. At the fair, information is available from each of the Peer Pod organizations, we give away swag, and talk to folks who may need a Peer during their visit to the fair. Staying sober at large social events can be a challenge! We hope that the presence of Peers shines a light on staying sober in everyday life and encourages those in recovery to be proud in the face of stigma.

Hello Friends and Supporters!

As summer begins to wind down, I feel grateful for all the opportunities it brings each year. We reach so many people at the community resource events hosted by great organizations throughout the summer, we gather under the shade awnings generously donated by the Jackson Foundation for support groups and our monthly barbeques, and we can give people a little relief as the heat becomes impactful to their wellbeing. If you know someone in need of Peer Support, please send them our way. It's still plenty uncomfortable out there.

That said, I am ready for a break from the heat and for the fun things fall will bring. We'll be honoring our volunteers in September and hosting our painting party fundraiser in November. Details to come!

As always, thank you for supporting us and be well.
