Dear Esther,

You start your morning at Cumaica, a coffee shop on 10th and Mission, and you notice the clean and well-organized cream and sugar station, which reflects the hard work and dedication of John C., an Arc participant, and valued employee. 

“This has been the best job,” he says."Sometimes the customers will give you tips, and those mean ‘thank you’. I always respond ‘Thank you! Enjoy your coffee.'"

John has been working at Cumaica for nine years. He began two days a week wiping down tables, restocking, and greeting customers. However, it wasn't long before owner Robert Guerrero recognized John's readiness for more responsibility.

John now works five days a week and Guerrero expresses his gratitude for the support and growth provided by The Arc SF job coaches. They closely supported John during his first week, gradually decreasing their one-on-one support as he became more independent. However, job coaches are always available to return and support any work changes.   

Today, he works the register and interacts directly with customers. Guerrero explains, "We constantly challenge him as he is a work in progress, and he enjoys taking on more customer service tasks. We have him working during the busy hours, where he is able to handle a lot more responsibilities."
