May is National Foster Care Month!
Dear Caregivers,
Welcome to another edition of the Caregiver Courier.
May is National Foster Care Month! This year’s theme, “Engaging Youth. Building Supports. Strengthening Opportunities.” highlights the need to create a child welfare system that authentically engages and supports young people who are preparing to leave foster care.
Each May it’s an honor for Clark County Family Services’ leadership to take time to recognize foster parents, child welfare professionals, family members, volunteers, mentors, policymakers, and others who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections.
Nearly 20,000 young people transition out of the foster care system each year without a permanent family. Giving our youth resources they need to succeed as adults begins during their time in care. It’s crucial that we use that moment to include them in case planning, help them build and nurture important relationships, and ensure they gain equitable access to outstanding opportunities.
The success of National Foster Care Month depends on our efforts to involve wonderful people like you in the community and raise awareness about the need to invest in the lives of children and youth in foster care. Every step we take to educate the community can make an enormous difference. Please consider helping to communicate messages that aim to encourage thousands of potential caregivers to open their hearts and homes to provide stability for our kids.
Tell your friends and followers about National Foster Care Month via social media! Here are a couple of sample messages for your consideration:
- May is National #FosterCareMonth! This year’s theme, “Engaging Youth. Building Supports. Strengthening Opportunities.” will raise awareness about authentic youth engagement, the importance of life-long connections, and how to best support youth as they transition out of foster care.
- May is here! Together we can make a difference in the lives of children in foster care. Let’s improve how we engage, support, and prepare youth to transition out of care into adulthood and independent living. #FosterCareMonth
Thank you for your love and commitment to our children and their families. Every day you take the necessary steps to help strengthen and preserve family bonds. We appreciate everything that you do!

Sincerely,
Jill Marano

Important Educations Updates May 2024
Almost done with the school year!
Woo hoo! Give yourself a pat on the back for making it to the finish line!
Supporting Your Child Through the Last Few Weeks of School/Final Exams
- The last few weeks of school can be stressful on students as they are: leaving seeing their peers and staff members they may enjoy and have gotten used to seeing on daily basis, taking final exams, worrying about their grades, etc.
- Talk with your child about what they may be stressed about and help them come up with a plan to address their stress such as setting up a study schedule or tackling one class at a time
- You can provide their child with some fun notes of encouragements, snacks, and/or incentives during final weeks (the last week of school) or for after school is out to help them make it through the final month!
-
This is a great time to check Infinite Campus or the Parent Portal through Canvas to see your child’s grades. If your child is getting an F or low D in any class, you or your child can ask child’s teacher what the most important assignments are to complete and what upcoming assignments their child should focus on to raise their grade in the class for the last few weeks. It is also recommended that your child first keep up with current work and then go back and do any makeup work. Students will receive a “0” for any assignment or test they do not take or make up. However, teachers are encouraged to accept late work if a parent or child asks for the opportunity to do makeup work and if the child shows initiative to make up work.
- If a teacher will not work with the parent or the child on makeup work, contact your School Foster Care Liaison, your child’s counselor, and/or your child’s administrators to help you advocate for your child.
Summer School Options Available to Make Up a Class or Get Ahead on Classes
CCSD Summer School for Middle and High Schoolers will be offered in 2 sessions: Session 1: May 28- June 14th and Session 2: June 17th through July 8th. Pre-Registration for Summer School begins on April 22, 2024 and ends on May 24, 2024.
CCSD will be offering summer school for:
- (1) original credit (credit to get ahead in classes/graduating and/or to get ahead to allow for extra classes in the child’s schedule the child may want or need for educational goals) for Current/Incoming High School Students and
- (2) credit retrieval (classes to obtain credit for classes the child failed or needs to promote to the next grade/needs to graduate) for Current Middle School Students
- Classes will be offered in-person on several campuses across Clark County and online via Nevada Learning Academy (NVLA)
- Some schools require daily attendance either in person or online and will also not give a child credit after missing several classes so check on the class requirement before you sign your child up for it or if you are taking vacations/time off.
Your child’s counselor will let you know if your child needs to take a class to promote to the next grade or graduate with their peers. CCSD School Counselors can pre-register students for the needed summer school course if you agree to put your child in it.
- If your child did not do well on exams, you see a low grade in a class after exams, or are worried your child might need to take a summer school class, check with your child’s counselor.
- If your child attends a non-CCSD school, find out through your child’s school what summer schools classes it offers or what schools/programs your child’s school will accept the credit from

If Your Child has an IEP, Find Out if Your Child has or needs Extended School Year (ESY) Services During the Summer
Extended School Year (ESY) is an IEP related service for children to continue to meet their IEP goals during times that school is out (i.e. summer, big breaks). It is accessed through the child's IEP. There is a box checked on the IEP if the child is to receive ESY services.
- ESY will be offered Summer 2024 from June 20th through July 17th with no school on June 19th, July 4th and July 5th.
- ESY services are optional. Families may choose to send or not send their children to ESY. Attendance is not required at ESY but encourages if a child is signed up for it.
- EDMs/Caregivers of children who have ESY services in their IEPs should be receiving an email or text asking them to opt into ESY and sign up for transportation if needed
- For more information on CCSD’s ESY or if you have not received any information on ESY and would like your child to attend, please contact your child’s special education teacher or CCSD’s ESY Office at 702-799-7455

On April 6, 2024, we were at the 8th Annual National Sibling Day Festival, and it was lots of fun! We presented a check to Christina Vela, CEO St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, for 40 siblings to go to Camp to Belong this summer. It is a week of fun and reunification for the foster children. We sponsor them every year!
