Let’s Celebrate National Make a Difference to Children Month!

Dear Caregivers,

July is National Make a Difference to Children Month. This special time focuses on the things you do every day for our children to help them thrive. We’re reminded how important it is for children to have the right person in their lives to guide them. To acknowledge the significance of this month, we encourage you to continue to support organizations throughout the valley that prioritize the well-being of children.

Would you like to volunteer your time or donate to a company that puts children first? We can point you in the right direction! Feel free to contact Clark County Family Services’ (CCFS) Resource, Development and Support Unit at (702) 455-0181 for a referral. It’s always the right time to make a positive difference in a child’s life.

For many children, just having adults pay attention to them and engage them in fun activities makes an enormous impact. These guiding figures can be parents, caregivers, older siblings, teachers, and other guardians.

Here are some additional ways you can enhance a child’s life this month, and every day:

Protect children

If you suspect a child is being harmed or has been hurt or abandoned, please report your concerns immediately to the appropriate authorities. The Clark County Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 day a week at (702) 399-0081.

Talk to a child

One of the best ways to help improve a child’s life is to get to know them better by understanding their needs. In many cases, all a child requires is the attention and time of someone because it makes them feel heard and cared for. So, talk to the children in your life, and spend time with them.

Become a CASA volunteer

The Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program falls under the jurisdiction of the Eighth Judicial District Court. The mission of the CASA program is to support and promote court appointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children. With as little as eight hours a month, a single volunteer can often be enough to change a child’s story and make a positive impact for generations to come. To learn more about the CASA program, go to CASALasVegas.org or call (702) 455-CASA (2272).

Last, but certainly not least, if you’re looking for some extra inspiration this month, please check out our brand new CCFS video podcasts. We have two! The first one is called Foster a Leader and it highlights stories and experiences from our department’s team. You can view it here.

Our second amazing podcast, titled Courageous Caregiver, introduces the audience to foster, relative, and fictive kin caregivers who truly make a difference in the lives of children in foster care. Please tune in. I hope you enjoy all the episodes!

Thank you so very much for everything that you do daily for our children and their families!

Sincerely,

Jill Marano

TBRI® Animate: Toxic Stress & The Brain

TBRI TIP OF THE MONTH:

TBRI® Animate: Toxic Stress & The Brain

"From the time we are born, our brains have 100 billion neurons and begin to form synaptic connections that make up who we are and how we function. Tragically, severe or prolonged abuse or neglect manifests in toxic stress which derails brain development and can even affect the immune system. This cycle is all too common for children from hard places of abuse, neglect, and/or trauma. Trust-Based Relational Intervention® offers holistic solutions that can begin the healing process from toxic stress. By recreating the developmental process, TBRI® strives to introduce the nurture that was absent in times of harm. Watch as this TBRI Animate explains the complexity of the human brain, the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences, and the hope for healing in trust-based relationships."

FREE MEMBERSHIP FOR HANNAH'S CLOSET SOUTH

Here is what you need to know for now: Next time you come into Hannah’s Closet, bring your placement letter and/or adoption decree and we’ll take it from there.

For this location, you MUST HAVE an appointment in order to shop. We DO NOT allow same day shopping or walk-ins. An appointment must be made at this link: https://app.vomo.org/opportunity/need-hannahs-closet at least 24 hours in advance.

Please also note that the caregivers must be the ones to show up and shop for their children. We do not allow Caseworkers, CASAs, etc. to shop. We implement this so that we can connect with families and try to plug them into community with other families and resources.

It can be confusing because Hannah’s Closet NORTH and SOUTH share the same name but have different rules in regards to shopping because we are run by two completely different organizations. We do apologize for that confusion, but are not in a position to change it at this point. If you have any questions regarding policies for Hannah's Closet South, please see the contact info below:

SOUTH: 702-546-8849 or Stacey@thehublv.com

Make an Appointment

Hannah's Closet North is a resource center for foster and adoptive families to receive clothing, toys, and other items. Families may "shop" free of charge once a month. Please provide your adoption decree, placement letter, or Foster Kinship referral when you come to shop.

We have made some changes to better serve our families and our volunteers. We have set aside days to shop for families with 4 or more children. Please check our calendar on Facebook for this month’s appointment days. Make an appointment by texting 702-518-2815 at least one day prior.

Hannah’s Closet North also has a support group called Fostering Families and Friendships for foster, adoptive, and kinship parents the 4th Friday of every month at Canyon Ridge Church. 6:30pm – 8:30pm.

Resource of the Month: Summer Bridge Books

  • While summer is a great time to hang out with your child and enjoy time off from school, for some children it is good to keep their school skills current. Doing a little bit of work each week can help them go back to school remembering what they have learned to make the transition back easier.
  • Summer Bridge Workbooks can be purchased online and are short lessons in Reading, Writing, and Math for children to practice over the summer. They were created by educators and are short enough to allow children to still enjoy summer. This is one resource that Family Services finds helpful for children but we do not promote this company and do not guarantee any outcomes by using these books.
  • You can purchase the books for the  grade your child was last in into the grade they are going into (for example, if your child is going into 2nd grade you can buy the 1st-2nd grade bridge book). If your child is struggling with last year’s grade level work, you can buy the book for the last 2 grades your child complete to refresh and support previously learned skills (for example, if your child just finished 1st grade and struggled, you could buy the K-1st Grade bridge book) . Any skills you can work with your child on and to help them practice will benefit them!
  • To learn more about the books, please visit Summer Bridge Activities Workbooks - $9.99 - ON SALE

Thank you for all you are doing to help your child succeed! Please contact your Family Services Representative for any assistance you need. We appreciate you very much!

First 5 Nevada Launches to Help Families

Being a parent can be hard, especially trying to find the programs and services that your child and family need. First5Nevada.org recently launched to ensure that every family in Nevada has access to the programs, resources, and supports they need to help their children grow and thrive.

From newborn through preschool, a child develops more rapidly than at any other time in their life. Research also shows that the quality of a child’s experiences in these first five years help shape how their brain develops. These experiences have a lasting impact on health, and the ability to learn and succeed when they reach school age and beyond. Quality early childhood development is good for our kids, good for our parents, good for our employers and good for Nevada.

That is why First 5 Nevada was created!

In Nevada, there are hundreds of programs to support child care and early education, maternal and child health, mental health, nutrition, financial assistance and more. But finding these programs, trying to determine if you are eligible to receive services, and applying can be difficult. We are so proud of the 85 students we have in Clark County Family Services who graduated from high school while involved in foster care. Graduation Celebration, our grads had an amazing time. They connected with community resources, enjoyed lunch, posed for professional graduation photos, picked out housewares and luggage, and received a special graduation gift including a new tablet and gift card. In addition, so many of our grads went home with amazing raffle baskets filled with gift cards, kitchenware, bath towels, and so many wonderful items to help them in the next chapter of their lives.

Please enjoy this Facebook post celebrating our graduates!

Happyt 4th of July and God Bless America!

We are celebrating 55 years assisting the children

in the Clark County Family Court system with lots of love and dedication.

We had our Annual Officer’s Installation Luncheon for all our members plus DFS and DJJS Dept. Heads attended. Many told stories about how we help their different areas, and it was quite emotional for all! The Honorable Judge Pickard swore in our Executive Board, which is Lynda Kreitlow, President; Marsha Manning, Vice President; Marci Beard, Recording Secretary; Doreen Law, Treasurer; Evan Rubin, Assistant Treasurer; Elise Rigatuso, Historian.

We are so busy having fun making holiday items for our 49th Annual Holiday Craft Boutique & Raffle on November 9th, 10am – 3pm at Desert Springs United Methodist Church, 120 N. Pavilion Center Dr. Las Vegas, 89144. 100% of fundraising proceeds and donations benefit the kids with no one in our group receiving pay of any kind. Please come and help us help the children! Bring your friends and family for a day, kicking off the holiday in a fantastic way!

We will have Handmade Fall & Christmas decorations for your home and office made by our talented members and friends! Also, great as gifts!

Plus, we will have delicious homemade baked goods, jams, bread and so much more! And an amazing raffle with gift certificates from different businesses plus a large screen TV, cash and so much more! Tickets are only 6 for $5 and the drawing is at 2pm at the boutique, but winners need not be present. Please come join the fun helping us to help the kids! Mark your calendar!

We have funded 40 of ‘Our Kids’ to go to Camp to Belong for a week. It is a camp where the siblings who are separated can be together. Our Treasurer, Doreen Law, volunteered to help the kids at camp and she had a fun time as did all the kids! We do this every year and are happy to see them reunited!

If you or anyone you know, would like to join Children's Service Guild, please contact Marsha Manning, Vice President and Membership Committee Chairwoman.
