April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month!
Dear Caregivers,
Help us kick-off Child Abuse Prevention Month on Friday, April 5, 2024, by wearing your favorite blue attire!
National Child Abuse Prevention Month is a time to recognize the important role that community partners and caregivers, just like you, play in protecting children. Child abuse prevention starts with each one of us. Together, we can make it easier for families to access support services and learn how to identify and build on family strengths.
Focusing on ways to build and promote protective factors, in every interaction with families, is the best thing our community can do to prevent child maltreatment and promote unsurpassed child development. Protective factors are conditions that, when present in families and communities, increase the well-being of children and families, and reduce the likelihood of maltreatment. Identifying protective factors helps parents find resources and coping strategies that allow them to parent successfully.
Promoting the following factors is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect:
- Nurturing and attachment: Research shows that babies who receive affection and nurturing from their parents have the best chance of developing into children, teens, and adults who are happy, healthy, and possess self-protective factors such as relational, self-regulation, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of parenting and of child and youth development: Parents who understand the usual course of child development are more likely to be able to provide their children with respectful communication, consistent rules and expectations, developmentally appropriate limits, and opportunities that promote independence.
- Parental resilience: All parents have inner strengths or resources that can serve as a foundation for building resilience. Parents who can cope with the stresses of everyday life, as well as an occasional crisis, have resilience – the flexibility and inner strength to bounce back when things are not going well.
- Social connections: Parents with a network of emotionally supportive friends, family, and neighbors often find that it is easier to care for their children and themselves.
- Concrete supports for parents: Families whose basic needs for food, clothing, housing, and transportation are met have more time and energy to devote to their children’s safety and well-being.
Are you interested in helping to further raise awareness in the prevention of child abuse and neglect on your personal social media platforms? We hope so! Here are a few sample messages for your consideration. Thank you for the role that you play to make Clark County a better place for children and their families!

On the Child Haven campus, many sibling groups are waiting for a loving and caring foster home. We know that children do better when they are in homes, versus congregate care. These children have spent months on campus and desperately need your help.
It is traumatic for children to be split up from their siblings while in foster care, and we need foster parents who will help these kids stay together.

Important Educations Updates April 2024
Almost done with the school year!
Woo hoo! Give yourself a pat on the back!
Check Your Child's Grades/Progress Report
- With 7 weeks of school left, this is a great time to get your child support they need to pass their classes/meet grade standards and not leave it to the last-minute scramble!
- Check your Parent Portal through Canvas or Infinite Campus to see your child’s grades. If you do not have access to the Parent Portal, please contact your child’s school
- Reach out to your child/your child’s teacher if your child is getting an F or low D in any class. We recommend you ask your child’s teacher what the most important assignments are to complete and what upcoming assignments your child should focus on to raise your child’s grade in the class.
- If a teacher will not work with you or your child on makeup work, please contact your child’s Foster Care Advocate at School or Assistant Principal who supervises that teacher. Schools are encouraged to work with children/families and accept late work rather no work!
-
Click here for information on CCSD’s Grading Policies
Check with Your Child’s School for On-Campus Summer School Options
- Summer School for Middle and High Schoolers will be offered in 2 sessions: Session 1: May 28- June 14th and Session 2: June 17th through July 8th. Some schools require daily attendance either in person or online so keep these dates in mind if your child needs summer school and you plan on taking vacations/time off.
- Pre-Registration for Summer School begins on April 22, 2024 and ends on May 24, 2024

- Click here for information on CCSD’s Summer School Options
- Click here for information on Summer School for Grades 6-12 and specific courses offered this summer
Reminder: Please Provide Your Placement Notification Letter (Letter) to Your Child’s School When You Receive It and When Your Child is Placed in Your Home
- Knowing in real time where a child is living determines transportation options to/from school and expedites any transportation requests for your child
- DFS and CCSD are jointly responsible for providing transportation to your child’s school for your child if the school your child is staying in is not zoned for your home or if your child is staying at their current school which is not in your area. DFS makes the determination for your child as to whether staying at your child’s current school or having them move schools is in the best interest of your child knowing their history and need for support. It is presumed under the law that your child will stay at their current school when being placed in your home. Moving schools has been identified in data on children in foster care to put them behind 4-6 months in their education and also to have detrimental effects on them when they are removed from familiar environments and supportive teachers and friends during this time of upheaval in their lives
- Any lack of current information or updated records can delay transportation, emergency contacts, and other important school related services and notifications
- When a child is placed in your home, find out what school the child will be attending from your DFS Representative. Please provide your Placement Notification Letter (Letter) and any other contact information to get a hold of you to the School Clerk/Registrar so they can put your information into Infinite Campus. Call your child’s school to get the email address of who to send your Letter to.

Happy Spring!
The Children’s Service Guild of Southern Nevada wish “Our Kids,” (the ones affected by Clark County Family Court system) lots of love and happiness!
The Guild continues working hard for the children and all their various needs. They are our mission and have been for over 50 years and always will be! We are all volunteers with no one receiving pay. We tirelessly work for them with lots of love!
Plus, a big shout out to the staff and volunteers at Child Haven! You show the kids love, compassion and guidance, which is exactly what they need.
May God bless all of us, the Foster families, DFS employees and volunteers whom we partner with for them.
We just had our annual Easter Party for the kids at Child Haven on Saturday, March 23rd and it was tons of fun! We had an Egg hunt, Easter baskets with goodies including chocolate bunnies donated by Safelite and Janet Taylor! Plus, pictures with our very own Easter Bunny Evan which they all get a timestamped copy. And then they got bubble wands! Yay!
