A benefit concert for the Interfaith Emergency Winter Shelter will be held at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 3800 E. Third Street, tonight, October 19, at 7:30 p.m. Music composed and directed by Sulaiman Zai, with guest composers and soloists Maria Izzo Walker, David Pereira, Jill Zai, David R. Reverend Mary Ann Macklin and Tafadzwa Matiure
As we witness the erosion of cherished values and key
components of democracy in this country, what calls us to remain steadfast? What calls us to our highest aspirations? What do we do with our fury? May we know once again that we are not isolated beings but connected, in mystery and miracle, to the universe, to this community and to each other. Join us for this worship service which will feature guest musician, Taffie Matiure.
Tafadzwa "Taffie" Matiure is a citizen of Zimbabwe. Winner of the prestigious DreamStar Zim competition in 2017 alongside his band, Footprints, Taffie is a renowned performer and teacher of mbira, marimba, acoustic guitar, percussion, vocal and traditional dancing. He grew to love music at an early age through the influence and mentorship of his late father, Dr. Sheasby Matiure, who taught & performed Shona music and founded the Mbira Queens in Bloomington, Indiana. Tafadzwa was a choirmaster of a boy's choir during high school, then enrolled in the Zimbabwean College of Music and graduated with a National Certificate in Music. Alongside his college studies, Tafadzwa frequently appears at the Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA), and the Annual International Carnival as a traditional dancer. He is currently completing his degree in Music Business, Musicology and Technology in Zimbabwe at Midlands State University.

For the month of October, we will be singing our children out after the Time for All Ages each Sunday with with the song "Sanctuary" by John Thompson and Randy Scruggs.

This Week in Religious Education: Healing
World of Wonder (Preschool)-will hear the story Old Jo and the Carpenter and think about how to build bridges and heal friendships when they are broken. The conclusion of Joseph and his brothers will be shared with Roots and Wings (K-2nd grade) as they continue to explore sibling rivalry and family relationships. Curiosity Club (3rd grade+) will be joined by one of our artists in residence, Janiece Jaffe, who will lead them in an investigation of the healing power of music and sound. Our Whole Lives (7th-8th grade) will learn about personal concerns and puberty. High School youth group will meet in the kitchen from 12:30-2:30 p.m. to eat nachos and make cookies for youth group alumni.

McNeill and Macklin: Autumnal Away!
Reverend Scott McNeill is taking some deserved time away from work. He will return November 7th to engage ministry. Reverend Macklin will depart November 8th to attend a "Death Doula" training in Asheville, NC and then spend a few days with family. She will return November 17th.

Voces Novae's Concert on the topic of Sanctuary, 2:00 p.m.
In the Meeting Room
Voces Novae's first concert of the 2018-19 season will explore the topic of Sanctuary.
At 2 pm on Sunday, October 21, come hear an uplifting 40-minute concert here in our Meeting Room. The program includes music by Peruvian composer Francisco Pulgar Vidal, settings of texts by DACA Dreamers, and music by choral favorites, Gjeilo and Whitacre. Social Justice Film Series - Ava DuVernay's 13th, 5:00 p.m.
The Social Justice Film Series will present Ava DuVernay's

at 5:00 p.m. this Sunday, October 21. This film is a highly acclaimed, in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it reveals the nation's history of racial inequity. Pizza will be served and a discussion will follow the presentation of the film. No child care is available for this event.

Flags to Welcome People to the Congregation
Earlier this summer, we purchased flags to welcome people to the congregation. Since then, we have purchased a few more to share our message of justice and compassion with those who walk, bike, or drive by. The three newest flags say: "No person is illegal," "Climate change is real," and "Black Lives Matter," plus we have a special flag honoring "Resilience".

BCT box office and in the Commons on Sunday mornings
. With Gladys DeVane telling stories, the UkeTones strumming away, Brother William Morris guiding us through an auction, and UU Minister Emeritus Rev. Bill Breeden and Forrest cooking as two of the six celebrity chefs, it should be a great evening with all proceeds benefiting the work of Shalom Community Center.

Keys to the Candidates
As many of you know, the Keys to the Candidates was published by the Herald-Times on October 5 and 6. The Keys document shows a comparison of candidates' responses to the same questions. The questions are designed to be nonpartisan and unbiased. All candidates running with opposition in Monroe County are sent the questions; candidates running without opposition are excluded. Not all candidates respond to the questions, but most do.

If you can't physically make it to church this Sunday, we invite you to join us via the
livestream on our website. At the church we also have screens set up in the nursery (Room 104) and in Fellowship Hall, if you need to leave the Meeting Room for any reason but still want to watch the service.
