NATIONAL ORANGE WINE DAY
On October 6, National Orange Wine Day takes a bold sip of an ancient method of winemaking! This little-known style of wine shines with its bold flavor and auburn color. Join the celebration as it gains some appreciation with vineyards, wine cellars, and lovers.
Originally made nearly 6,000 years ago in Eastern Europe, the technique for making orange wine is being rediscovered. Surprisingly, winemakers do not add oranges to the wine at all. Unlike the latest beer trends, the wine comes by its color naturally. Fermented from white wine grapes, the orange wine develops through more skin contact during the fermentation process. Makers treat the white grapes like red grapes preserving the bolder body and tannins. As a result, the ordinarily white wine will deepen into a brandy orange color.
Despite the wine's obscurity, orange wine makes appearances at wine shows. Vineyards display their orange efforts from the United States to Australia. Get in on the tasting and find a bottle to share!

A new forecast released Thursday buys at least another month for the New Orleans area before salt water advancing up the Mississippi River reaches the city, providing some relief in the race to build pipelines to protect drinking water.
The new timeline released by the Army Corps of Engineers says salt is not predicted to reach New Orleans' main drinking water intake by the end of November, and may not reach it at all. Earlier predictions had it arriving Oct. 28.
The same is true for East Jefferson, where salt water had been expected to arrive by Oct. 29.
It is now projected to reach New Orleans' Algiers plant by Nov. 23 instead of Oct. 22, and to reach the intake in Gretna by by Nov. 26 instead of Oct. 25.

About the Exhibition
In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.
Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.
Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.
A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

Los Güiros
Los Guiros is an original Psychedelic Cumbia based in New Orleans, LA. Blending the influence of traditional folkloric dance rhythms of Colombia and the trippy guitar & organ driven sounds of Peruvian Chicha with modern electronic elements, Los Guiros brings listeners of all backgrounds on a musical journey that honors the past while pushing into the future. Whether performing in dive bars, in nightclubs or on festival stages Los Guiros always puts on a high-energy show leaving fans agreeing that (as one enthusiastic Bonnaroo fan stated), “…dancing is MANDATORY.”

St. Tammany’s big 10 fall flings
BY JESSICA SAGGIO
•Oct. 4-8: St. Tammany Parish Fair
A more than 100-year tradition, the St. Tammany Parish Fair will return to the parish fairgrounds in Covington Oct. 4-8, with the pageant and rodeo queen contest beginning before then on Sept. 23 and Oct. 1, respectively. This year’s fair includes all the familiar favorites: midway rides, the mini farm, JoJo the Magic Clown, 4H exhibits and live performances. On Oct. 6 at 9 a.m., a parade will lead crowds to the official opening ceremony at the Parish Fairgrounds off North Florida Street, but midway rides and fair festivities begin before then.
This year’s fair will have live performances by Patrick Thompson, Highway 190, Isabel Williams, Southern Patriot, Anna and Soul Revival. It will also include a gospel night and Wild West Show the evening of Oct. 5, and a rodeo the evenings of Oct. 6 and 7. The fair will play host to a dance and cheer competition, chicken calling contest, art demonstrations and much more.
For a full timeline and list of events, visit sttammanyparishfair.info. Times vary by day. Weekend festivities require a $5 entrance fee for adults and $3 for children under age 12. Midway ride bands can be purchased between $25 and $30 depending on the day, and the Wild West Show and rodeo require a separate entry fee of $15 for adults and $10 for children.
•Oct. 7: Bluesberry Music & Art Festival
The Bluesberry Music and Art Festival will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Bogue Falaya Park in Covington. The festival promises “a family-friendly celebration of world-class music, art, food and culture with a blueberry twist at every turn” — and will expand this year with a third stage for performances.
The event features art vendors, food trucks, a beer and wine garden, live art demonstrations and an interactive children’s village. However, music will be the main attraction with performances by Kevin & The Blues Groovers, Big 50, Ally Venable Band, Mike Zito and The Band of Heathens. A separate Ozone Songwriters stage will feature up-and-coming talent and a third “River Revival” stage has been added this year to feature gospel artists.
“We look forward to expanding our festival’s musical variety and showcasing even more of the incredible talent we have right here in our own backyard,” said Bluesberry co-founder Sarah Federer.
Tickets to the event are $30 in advance, or $40 at the gate. Children under 10 are free. A VIP package is also available for $90. Parking is throughout downtown and a shuttle will transport eventgoers from the St. Tammany Justice Center. Visit thebluesberryfest.com for more.
•Oct. 14: Wild Things
It’s been a long time coming, but Wild Things officially returns this year for the first time since 2019. The event was canceled in years prior due to COVID-19 safety precautions, but this year, Refuge Ranger Rebecca Larkins said “it feels great to be back.” The free event will take place at the refuge headquarters in Lacombe at 61389 La. 434 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Wild Things festival is an event created to celebrate all things outdoors and will feature live music by the Dead End Blues, food, boat and canoe tours, fish casting stations, a children’s activity tent with crafts and face painting, nature talks, live animal presentations, hayrides, target shooting and a “story walk” by the St. Tammany Parish Library.
“This is the one-stop shop to the great outdoors,” said Larkins. “… It is truly a celebration of National Wildlife Refuges where it is our mission to connect people to nature.”
A youth art contest and “Walk for the Wild” 5K will also take place ahead of the event. For more information on those, visit fws.gov/refuge/big-branch-marsh.
•Oct. 13-15: Wooden Boat Festival
The Wooden Boat Festival is back at Maritime Museum Louisiana in Madisonville. A kickoff “Maritime Mania” party will take place Oct. 13 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. with food, live music by Category 6, a silent auction and pirate costume contest. However, the main event will run Oct. 14-15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. This year’s festival will feature live music on Saturday by Monster Crawfish, Sugar Bomb and Bottoms Up, and on Sunday, the Chase Tyler Band. Food and art vendors will line the event alongside boat displays and a children’s village.
The children’s village will include 30 kid vendors from Market Munchkins, activities from the St. Tammany Children’s Museum, Northshore Robotics, a pumpkin-decorating station, presentations from the Plauche’s Battalion reenactors, a mermaid visit and slides. Music for the kids will be provided by School of Rock, Felix Schafer, the Schafer Family Ensemble and the Northshore American Harpist Society.
Coinciding with the festival will also be the “Quick n’ Dirty” boat building contest where teams work to both build and decorate a boat that will be put to the test at the festival’s parade Sunday evening down the Tchefuncte River.
Tickets to the event are $10 for adults and free for children under 12. Early birds who grab tickets in September only pay $8 at maritimemuseumlouisiana.org.
•Oct. 20-22: Slidell Food and Fun Festival
The Slidell Food and Fun Festival hosted by Saint Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church is slated to return Oct. 20-22 at the church campus on Robert Boulevard in Slidell. The fair runs from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, then Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday noon to 9 p.m. This year’s festival will feature carnival rides, 15 food vendors, games, raffles and live entertainment. The music lineup includes performances by the Stacy Weaver Band, Witness, Voodoo Gumbo, Where Ya At Brass Band, Fistful of Flannel, Soul Brass Band, Swingaroux, Home Run Jack, Out Da Box and Caroline Tebbs. Entrance to the fair is free, but rides require a wristband, though prices for those have not been announced.
•Oct. 20-21: Abita Fall Fest
Back for another celebration filled with music, food, drinks, activities and artisanal vendors, the Abita Fall Fest returns at the Abita Springs Trailhead. The event will jump-start with the “Fall Fest After Dark” Oct. 20 featuring live performances by Julian Primeaux, Bon Bon Vivant and Marc Broussard. Food and drink will be available at this music-centric kickoff, but the activities area of the event will not be open. Tickets to the after-dark fest are $20, and children under 10 are free.
On Oct. 21, the festival will be in full swing with a host of vendors, an “interactive circle” with hands-on experiences, a Tiger Tailgate football viewing station and live performances by the Imagination Movers, Gal Holiday, Strange Roux, Tyler Kitchen & The Right Pieces, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Tyler Farr on the main stage. A separate “Trail Stage” will feature Tom Leggett, Lilli Lewis, Cactus Thief, The Stumpgrinders and Christian Serpas & Ghost Town.
There’s plenty for the littles as well in the Kid Zone, including carnival games, face painting, a petting zoo, crafts and pony rides. A special “pumpkin stage” will be in the Kids Zone where the Tchefunky Playground Band will perform, and a magic show, princess party and juggling act will take place. Fun for the whole family is also available at the “Harvest Matchup,” where there will be inflatables, football and archery.
Advance tickets to the main event are $25 for adults, $15 for kids ages 3-10, and free for kids 2 and under. Tickets at the gate are $35. See more at abitafallfest.com.
•Oct. 28: Symphony on The Lake
Grab those chairs and enjoy a sunset over Lake Pontchartrain with the soothing sounds of classical music from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra.
Symphony on the Lake will take place at the Mandeville Lakefront between Coffee and Carroll streets from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 28. The LPO will perform works by Copland, Brahms, Britten, Saint-Saens, Duke, Gershwin, Offenbach, Williams, Sousa and others. Food trucks will be on site at this free event, but picnics will also be permitted.
•Nov. 3-5: Ozone Songwriters Festival
One of the north shore’s signature events for up-and-coming talent, the Ozone Songwriters Festival, the festival will host more than 130 local, regional and national music artists who will sing their hearts across four stages. The event features not only musical talent, but songwriting talent. A VIP Showcase will take place Nov. 3 at the Old Rail Brewing Company, with performances by event creator and Grammy-nominated recording artist Greg Barnhill, among others. Tickets for the showcase range from $65 to $130.
The following days will include performances and a songwriter contest where a winner will be selected for a one-song record deal. Specific details about this portion of the event and stage locations have not been finalized yet.
A songwriter workshop will also take place where budding artists can learn the ins and outs of studio recording, social media, engineering and more. The cost to attend the workshop is $40. More information on the workshop will be posted on the festival’s website at ozonemusic.org as details are announced.
“The festival gives new songwriters the chance to be in front of a live audience and have their songs heard, and to gain valuable stage experience, as well as get a reaction to their songs,” said Barnhill. “It’s also a great experience for the audience, for they might just be seeing the next Usher or Taylor Swift.”
•Nov. 10-12: Festival of the Lake
Our Lake of the Lake Roman Catholic Church will again host its annual fair at its campus on Lafitte Street in Mandeville. The free event will run 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Nov. 10-11, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 12. •Nov. 11-12: 3 Rivers Art Festival
Touted as one of the largest juried art shows in the region, the 3 Rivers Art Festival returns to downtown Covington Nov. 11-12. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. More than 200 juried artists from across the nation, and world in some cases, will line both sides of Columbia Street featuring myriad artistic mediums.
“We have everything,” said event coordinator Sarada Bonnett. “Woodworking, watercolor, metalsmithing, glass and everything in between. 2D, 3D paintings. You name it, it’s there.”
Artists were vetted from nearly 500 applicants, she said, and the festival has been recognized by Sunshine Artist as one of the best in the country. Artist awards will be presented at a special event on Saturday night.
Live music will feature Crispin Schroeder, Those Olivier’s, The Teche Two, Dr. Ben Redwine, Lake Ragan, Ghost Town Duo, Jude LeBlanc and Jake Gunter.
A tented food court will be set up for patrons, and a children’s village will keep the kiddos occupied with a hands-on dinosaur experience, children’s museum activities and canvas painting. A separate student art contest is also part of the event and winners will be awarded that Sunday at 2 p.m. For more, visit covingtonthreeriversartfestival.com.

Fearless
Cowardly
Inventive
What does "intrepid" mean?
Fearless
intrepid Pronunciation: in-TREP-id
Definition: fearless; adventurous
Origin: from Latin "intrepidus" meaning "not trembling" or "not frightened"
Example: The intrepid explorer ventured deep into the jungle, undeterred by the dangers that lay ahead.
Fearless is an apt synonym for the word "intrepid." To be intrepid means to be without fear, to have the courage to face challenges and take risks. It entails a willingness to step outside of one's comfort zone and embrace the unknown. An intrepid person is not afraid to explore new territories, whether they be physical or mental. This quality is often associated with adventurers, explorers, and pioneers who have a passion for pushing boundaries and discovering new things. To be intrepid is to be bold and daring, and to live life to the fullest.

NATIONAL NOODLE DAY
October 6th and National Noodle Day recognizes oodles of noodles just in time for National Pasta Month! What style do you prefer?
If you missed National Linguine Day in September, this day offers an opportunity to make up for it.
The word noodle derives from the German word nudel.
Noodles are made by rolling unleavened dough out and cutting into a variety of shapes. While long, flat noodles may seem to be the most common, they come in several forms, names, and textures. And each kind of noodle pairs differently with sauces and meals.
Found in regions all over the world, noodles are made from a variety of flours. In Asian cuisine, root vegetables, such as yams and potatoes, beans, rice, wheat, and buckwheat are all found in a wide assortment of noodles. Europeans make most of their pasta from durum or semolina flour, though potato noodles a enjoyed as well.
The method of making noodles from wheat or rice flour, as we commonly know them today, likely developed later in Chinese history, with some historians suggesting it may have occurred during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE).
Noodles also have a significant history in Italy, with pasta being a staple in Italian cuisine. The earliest recorded reference to pasta in Italy is in the 13th century, but it is likely that pasta was being made and consumed before then.
In 2002, archaeologists along the Yellow River in China found an earthenware bowl containing some 4000-year-old noodles which had been well preserved. However, this historic find may not have been the same type of noodles we are familiar with today. Either way, noodles have a complex and ancient history, with different cultures contributing to their development over time.
8 Common Noodles Around the World
Noodles vary depending on the region and culture, but some types of noodles are widely consumed and recognized around the world. Here is our shortlist of the most common types of noodles:
- Wheat noodles
- Rice noodles
- Ramen
- Spaghetti
- Linguine
- Fettuccine
- Lasagna
- Egg noodles

When would it affect me?
Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers released a timeline that projected when drinking water would be impacted by the salt intrusion.
According to those projections here is when areas of Jefferson Parish could be impacted:
| |
‘Hoses on a spool’
In Jefferson, two separate plans for the east and West Banks were also getting underway, though both involved smaller-scale, flexible pipelines.
Contractors were preparing to start work on the West Bank, whose intake is located at Marrero. Similar work in East Jefferson, further upriver in Old Jefferson, is expected to begin later.
Mark Drewes, director of public works, said equipment was staged and work could begin on the West Bank as soon as a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers is received. Once the contractors begin, the project could be completed in three weeks, he said.
“We're calling it a flexible waterline system, but it's kind of like pipes or hoses on a spool and they roll it out,” Jefferson Parish president Cynthia Lee Sheng said in an interview.
The West Bank system will include four, 12-inch diameter lay-flat pipes with four diesel pumps at five-mile increments. The east bank will include five lay-flat pipes.
The entire Jefferson Parish project could cost between $12.5 million and $15 million a month, Lee Sheng said. Coastal Pump & Equipment, based in Broussard, was selected to provide and install the equipment.
New Orleans had initially spoken of a regional pipeline for the east bank of both the city and Jefferson Parish, but Jefferson announced on Friday it would build its own, noting the huge difference in the amount of water required. The pipelines will run parallel on the river batture, but discussions are ongoing on whether they could augment one another if there is a problem.
East Jefferson’s plant processes about 40 million gallons per day, compared to up to 150 million for Carrollton.
“I think part of the part of the challenge is the size -- being able to have that full amount of water for both parishes,” Nelson said

Friday's Wine School...Rutherford dust, the minerality of Chablis, the slate soils of the Mosel, Volcanic ash of Santorini …while many factors determine how a wine tastes, the soil in which grapes grow has a tangible effect on the wine that ultimately ends up in the bottle. And while terroir is often used to describe a wine for its “sense of place” — meaning the regional microclimates and grape varieties grown — when it comes to soil, we're going to "dig" a little deeper to discover why it really matters and revive our delicious and informative series, Let's Talk Dirt…
What does the Rhone Valley in France have in common with the Margaret River region in Australia and Stellenbosch in South Africa or Priorat in Spain and the Rhein region in Germany? All of these amazing wine regions are home to some of the oldest soils in the world and are all associated with geological histories that have allowed for the accumulation of some pretty ancient dirt! These specific areas have soils that have been shaped over millions of years, and they are essential components of the terroir, influencing the flavors and characteristics of the wines produced. Be it tectonic forces, metamorphism, erosion, volcanic activity, and more, these geological influences have created some of the most highly regarded wines worldwide. We hope you'll join us as we taste 5 wines from some of the oldest soils on the planet and discuss how they developed and what they mean for grape growing. Reserve your spots here, Let's Talk Dirt, 3 spots remaining

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.
See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

PLAYMAKERS’ WANTS YOU TO GET YOUR TICKETS
FOR INTO THE BREECHES! OPENING THIS WEEKEND
The 2023-24 Playmakers Theater season begins with a WWII era comedy interwoven with Shakespeare’s Henry IV and V – of course, women play all the roles. Well, almost. Into the Breeches! is directed by Merry Antoon assisted by Naomi Lee Shawn-O’Donnell. The show runs Sept. 30-Oct. 15.
The New Orleans WWII Museum is collaborating on Breeches!, a masterful blending of a story about women taking the stage to take their minds off their husbands “over there” with soaring Shakespearean dialogue including the rousing “Band of Brothers” speech. In an interesting twist, the script, written to take place in Rhode Island, allows localization and Playmakers has employed a local historian to update the script to take place in WWII-era New Orleans.
To set the Forties ambience, the theater lobby will be decked out with WWII era posters and actual newspapers announcing the Pearl Harbor raid, the declaration of war and the Allied invasion of Europe.
Playmakers’ season tickets are now on sale for all six shows for $150 on BonTempsTix.com or individual tickets for Into the Breeches! which runs Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. are available for $20, also at BonTempsTix.com.
Into The Breeches is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by the St. Tammany Parish Commission on Cultural Affairs. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Philip Melancon
Mancini’s music was the soundtrack of mid-century Hollywood. He contributed to over 250 movies and scores of T.V. shows. To name a few: Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther in the 50’s, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Two for the Road in the 60’s, Darling Lili in the 70’, and Victor / Victoria in the 80’s. The focus of Mancini by Moonlight is the lyrical songs of Mancini. Although this giant of American music was recognized for his sweeping scores, here we feature his songs with lyrics. Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, It Had Better Be Tonight and such. It’s a rich library of exceptional melodies coupled with the masterful lyrics of Johnny Mercer, Leslie Bricusse and Jay Livingston.
Mancini by Moonlight: the cabaret, will be performed by the seasoned duo of Heidi and Phil Melancon. Joined to their hips the ever so hip David Cook and Alden Hagardorn.
See you under the twinkling stars of Monkey Hill.

October 8th
Davell Crawford
Trad Jazz Band
Known as "The Prince of New Orleans," Davell Crawford is an all-around musical sensation as a pianist, singer, songwriter, and performer. Raised in the church, Davell is the grandson of the rhythm & blues star James "Sugar Boy" Crawford, who wrote the New Orleans hit song “Jockomo,” later known as “Iko Iko.”
Davell has been playing piano since he was 7 years old and although he didn't know his grandfather was a musician at the time, the elder Crawford gave him a keyboard when he was 11, and he soon first toured Europe in his early teens.
Like so many New Orleans musicians, Crawford brings a synthesis of styles to his playing, weaving together funk, gospel, and R&B to his piano playing, songwriting and singing. A Steinway endorsed pianist, Davell has released more than 7 albums since 1995 on imprints such as Rounder Records, Basin Street Records, and more. Bill Taylor from Blues Access proclaims that, “Plain and simple, Davell Crawford is one of the most talented musicians alive.”
This evening is a RARE opportunity to experience Davell lead a band
of local legends in a return to some of his early heritage, in this intimate,
dance-able setting!
October 15th
New Leviathan
Oriental Foxtrot Orchestra
The New Leviathan Oriental FoxTrot Orchestra is an American revival orchestra, that performs authentic orchestrations of vintage American popular music from the 1890s through the early 1930s.
In addition to the well-known compositions of jazz and ragtime composers like Jelly Roll Morton, Fletcher Henderson, and Eubie Blake, the orchestra's repertory includes the work of other New Orleans Tin Pan Alley composers such as Larry Buck, Joe Verges, Paul Sarebresole, and Nick Clesi.
Taking its name from the SS Leviathan, a transatlantic ocean liner with a well-regarded dance band at the start of the 1920s, the orchestra was founded in 1972. Their first performance was at Tulane University, presenting a rather tongue-in-cheek concert of "Best-Loved Oriental Foxtrots," partially satirizing the then-current revival of scholarly interest in classic ragtime. They've been together ever since, still recruiting new musicians along the way.

Kermit Ruffins
& The BBQ Swingers
From playing himself in the HBO Series Tremé, to barbecuing outside his bar, Kermit’s Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge, to sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, trumpeter & vocalist
Kermit Ruffins keeps himself busy when he isn’t on stage doing what he does best—entertaining and sharing his love of life with the world.
But he did not come by his gifts easily. Ruffins did his homework and developed his stage persona and musical act by studying artists who came before him. He watched videos of Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway until the tape wore out, cut his teeth busking the streets of the French Quarter, and apprenticed on stages with local legends “Uncle” Lionel Batiste and Danny Barker. While still in high school, he co-founded the Rebirth Brass Band, but eventually left the touring band to return home to the culture he missed so much, launching The BBQ Swingers, now a beloved New Orleans institution.
Some say Ruffins resembles king pops, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong himself.
Join us this evening for Kermit's first time back at Nickel-A-Dance
in more than 5 years, and you be the judge...!

Herlin Riley
& The Crescent City Joymakers
with special guest Shannon Powell!
New Orleans is a drummer’s town. But in this town full of first class drummers, Herlin Riley is “the” drummer. The Baron of the Boom Boom. The Pulse that keeps the life flowing through any body of work.
Born into a musical family steeped in gospel, blues and jazz, Herlin was asked by Wynton Marsalis to join him in New York in 1988 where Herlin stayed for almost 20 years, all the while still maintaining a home in New Orleans.
Today, he still is a regularly featured musician with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, but has since been based back in his hometown when he wasn't on tour with Ahmad Jamal, Dr. John, or Harry Connick, Jr. He lights up any stage with just his presence alone, and always fires up the first class musicians who love to play with him.
+ Plus! "The King of Tremé," Mr. Shannon Powell himself guests for this special installment of Nickel, making for a powerful rhythm fest of a finale to our 30th Year carrying the flame for jazz-dance tradition.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge
Story by Zack Nagy
© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation
LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.
LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.
Related video
Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).
Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.
LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.
The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.
LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.

We will distribute 1500 boxes of food containing a frozen turkey (if available) or ham along with non-perishable food items while supplies last.

Exciting news from the Office of Lt. Governor and the Office of Tourism! We're thrilled to announce the stunning new design for our float as we gear up for our 3rd year in the 2024 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.
This year’s theme is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language." Our float features a larger-than-life Mardi Gras jester, fleur de lis, second-line inspired umbrellas, and lots of purple, green, and gold.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!
