Two Cultures, One Mission
Janice Munemitsu
This week's Friday Notes will be peppered with photos taken during International Days. Last Friday we highlighted Mr. Michael Whitehorse Aviles of the Tongva Gabrielino Band of Mission Indians. In addition to Mr. Whitehorse Aviles, we were thrilled to welcome author Janice Munemitsu, the author of The Kindness of Color. Ms. Munemitsu told the true story of two immigrant families, one Japanese and one Mexican, and their struggle against racism in Southern California. These two families fought for justice together, resulting in a landmark court case and the desegration of California's schools, seven years before Brown v. Board of Education.

The family dance group is comprised of Ba’ac Garcia, of the Tohono O’odham Nation, Nanabah Kadenehii of the Navajo Nation, who is a national champion hoop dancer, and Lupe Lopez, who told stories and shared the history of our land. Red Boy Productions travels the world sharing the history and culture of Native American tribes. They are most famous for their collaboration with Nike, Born X Raised.

Passports and Recipes
5th Grade
Ms. Myrick-Causey and Mrs. Smith's 5th grade classes created passports for students to document International Days 2024. Students checked a variety of experiences. Learning about the Tongva tribe, Ms. Janice Minemitsu, and the hoop dance from Red Boy Productions were a few of their favorites. They also recorded their visits to Lower School classes to share their “I Am” poems, their interviews with Foothill faculty and staff, and their research project, “Journey to Los Angeles.” Fifth graders completed the week with full passports!
5th grade also created recipe books. The recipe book is a digital compilation of recipes from the families of the Class of 2027. Students asked their family about a favorite or cherished dish and then brought their recipes to school where they added them to a group slide deck. The recipe book will serve as a memento of this year’s International Days.

Thank You Parents!
We are so grateful to all of the parents (and grandparents!) who helped with International Days. From donating food, to making videos and presenting your family stories in the classroom, parents made it happen! Here are just a few parents we caught in the act of teaching and sharing last week!

4th Grade Culture Corner
Mrs. Coeyman's class is practicing their presentation skills, and sharing their own stories. Last week students stood in front of the class and spoke about themselves with a visual slide, then took questions. Some classmates are surprised to learn about all the different countries represented in 4th grade!

Seedling Around the World
We didn't want you to miss the cuteness overload here: our preschool division enjoyed International Days as well! They came to Foothill for some of the presentations, they enjoyed cultural food, and their parents came in as guest speakers.

Sharing Our Stories: Foothill Families
International Days 2024
This week Peter F. (4th) tells us why Greek families break plates, and he even breaks a few with his grandmother! Over the Winter holidays, we asked families to tell us something about their cultural traditions. These videos were so inspiring that we thought we would bring them out of the classroom and to our whole community, via Friday Notes. Look for a new video each week!
