Our second graders put on a wonderful Thanksgiving program for their families. They sang songs, recited poems and danced to the delight of their audience. Many of our classes enjoyed Thanksgiving feasts. Thank you for the donations to the classroom feasts. The children had an amazing time celebrating with their friends.

The Hour of Code is a global movement serving over 180 countries in celebration of Computer Science Education Week. Its purpose is to show that computer science is a fundamental skill which anyone can learn by starting with the basics in an hour-long tutorial. Lakeview School got hooked and goes beyond an hour of code throughout the school year by nurturing problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity when we code stories, graphics, games and especially with our Spheros. Every year we still love to do the Hour of Code because it affords our first graders - exposed to computer science for the first time - the opportunity to work with fifth grade mentors, it allows our staff to take a break from their busy day for students to teach their gym teacher how to code, and it connects us with our Denville community when they accept our invitation to learn alongside our students. We look forward to and appreciate the invaluable time spent with all our special guests but most importantly, the Honorable Mayor Andes, "coding with a cop" and our Family Code Night when we get to have our families join in the fun.

Now as temperatures are dropping, students may have more indoor recess days. Fourth and fifth grade students have an opportunity to use these days as an opportunity to participate in Lakeview's Walking Book Club. Students express an interest to their teachers that they would like to participate, and on a rotating basis, they are selected to walk a given path inside the building on indoor recess days as they listen to an audiobook. Our Listening Library collection continues to grow each year with books on tapes, CDs and Playaways.

Please remember students are still outside during recess weather permitting. Since the weather is turner colder, it is important to dress your child appropriately for the colder weather. Their time outside is more enjoyable, if they are dressed for the weather.

Our Lakeview Lions enjoyed an assembly "Drumming Up Character" which is a powerful character education program that combines ensemble drumming, dancing, character rap songs and the performing arts. All of the students had an opportunity to actively participate in this innovative program. Even our teachers enjoyed drumming to the character rap songs. Special thanks to Ms. Fries for organizing this even and our PTA for sponsoring it.

As we end this calendar year, we will continue to focus on good citizenship, tolerance and understanding of others. The school counselors, teachers, and staff help students develop strategies to effectively deal with conflicts through the use of "I" statements and enhancing the students' abilities to communicate their feelings in a positive way without placing blame or name calling. These skills go a long way in making the school community as well as the playground a positive learning environment. Lakeview remains committed to support our citizens in a considerate and respectful manner. Learning how to communicate thoughts and feelings effectively, and how to listen to others, are essential life-skills that need continual practice. Reinforcement at home of these skills enable the students to internalize these strategies.
