The school year is off to a great start here at Valleyview. The students and teachers are working really hard on getting to know one another and create an exciting learning environment for all.
This past Tuesday, September 24th, Valleyview was honored to welcome The First Lady of New Jersey, Mrs. Tammy Murphy. Along with just a few other schools, Valleyview was selected to share our efforts related to sustainability.
Throughout the tour, teachers and students had a chance to showcase a variety of projects: Hydroponics in the STEM Lab, improved recycling with "Every Last Drop" and Composting in the Cafeteria, samples of our own produce, green practices in Life Skills, a lesson on Human Civilizations and the Environment using "The Lorax," creative Nature Photography Inspired Narratives, a tour of the School Garden and a dedication of the TREX Plastic Challenge bench. The First Lady was very complimentary of Valleyview's school community as a whole, and especially impressed with the involvement of our student ambassadors at each stop.
We also appreciated the support of additional guests from our District and Township. Mayor Tom Andes was on hand to discuss Denville's Open Space initiatives, which include Muriel Hepner Park right across the road. Don Tidey and Phyllis Cary, with the Denville Township Green Sustainability Committee, shared our collaborations over the past year related to plastic waste and the environment. The TREX Plastic Challenge included a collection in the Public Library, overseen by Siobhan Koch, Director.
As part of her Climate Change initiatives, The First Lady is eager to see what Valleyview accomplishes next! Stay tuned.
