Good evening, Stone Tower SDA Church,
I hope and pray that you and your family are doing well!
It was a pleasure to spend time with many of you at the Outdoor Sabbath last weekend. (And to be fair, I used more Spanish in the prior 4 days than I had in the last 4 years!)
Last Tuesday, I shared this anecdote (amazing fact :) with our church board.
During a study at Harvard in 1957, Dr. Curt Richter placed rats in a pool of water to test how long they could tread water. On average they'd give up, sink and drown after 15 minutes.
But right before they gave up due to exhaustion, the researchers would pluck them out, dry them off, let them rest for a few minutes and put them back in for a second round.
In this second try, how long do you think they lasted?
Remember, they had just swam until failure only a few short minutes ago...
How long do you think?
- Another 15 minutes?
- 10 minutes?
- 5 minutes?
NO! 60 HOURS!
That's not an error. That's right!
60 HOURS of swimming, which is 2.5 DAYS!
The conclusion drawn was that since the rats BELIEVED that they would eventually be rescued, they could push their bodies way past what they previously thought impossible.
"Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." - Hebrews 12:2
There is power in hope.
“The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” - I Sam. 17:37a
"For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
"But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— " - II Cor. 4:6-9
What gives you hope, today? :)
By the way, I will be conducting an evangelistic series entitled: "The Creator and the Counterfeit" on Thursday evening, Friday evening and Sabbath mornings, from Oct. 10 to Nov. 2 at the Lents Activity Center. If that's something you'd like to attend and support (and pray for), please stay tuned for further announcements!
I'll be at Lents this Sabbath (and then heading to Canada for a Revival Series, and to visit my parents). I will be back with you all the week of the Outdoor Sabbath at McIver Park.
Let's continue to lift each other (and both Stone Tower and Lents) in prayer!
