Volunteer News
From Our President
I hope you all had a fun-filled Labor Day holiday and that you were able to get some gardening tasks completed if those were on your list of “To-Do’s”. We had an absolutely beautiful day last Saturday and it brought out 15 of our Master Gardeners to volunteer in the Water Wise Garden and they continued the cleaning up many of the beds that needed attention. We had 2 more volunteers step up to be co-adopters for one of the larger beds. Thank you, Jane Tarulli, and Cynthia Roderique, for your dedication to the garden! Liz Taylor spent part of her birthday with us, and we thank her for letting us be a part of her special day. Thanks Liz! Please visit the Water Wise and see all the progress our MGs are making. Big “thank you’s” to the following for another great workday: Sherry Wirth, Ellen Placzek, Jane Tarulli, Barbara Decker, Dennis Brady, Donna Bade, Margerie West, Nancee Dahms-Stinson, Deanna Sandridge, Tina Stillwell, Liz Taylor, Cynthia Roderique, Benjamin Baranek, Barbara Brown, and Isaac Walker. Nicholas is doing a great job over there and if you are interested in helping him and his team, please contact him at: nicholascloyd@gmail.com or (417) 861-3789.
On Wednesday, we had a group from Jefferson City tour our Demonstration Garden as well as a few of the other gardens at Nathaneal Green Park. The Learning in Retirement members were given a walking tour through the Demo Garden that was led by Dwight Lindsay and David Brown, Co-Chairs of the garden. Several folks in the tour group were also Master Gardeners from the Cole County chapter in Jefferson City. Everyone was very impressed with how gorgeous and well kept our garden is as well as the diversity of all the plantings and the number of volunteers it takes to care for everything. They said it was obvious the garden is well loved. I want to thank Dwight and David for all the hard work they continue to do that keeps the garden up and running and for the new gate they recently built to replace the old one on the corral. They are doing an awesome job and if you get a chance to visit the park, please stop in to see the Demo Garden. As always, if you would like to volunteer there, please contact David Brown at 417-827-5907 or Dwight Lindsay at 417-839-3784.
We still have some of the gray MG T-shirts for sale. They are $5 each and will be available to purchase at the Chapter meeting next Tuesday. Caroline will be collecting the money. The sizes we have available are as follows:
(1) 4XL grey crewneck,
(3) 3XL grey crewneck,
(2) 3XL grey V-neck,

We also still have (13) Small green crewneck and (3) Pairs nitrile gloves. We would like to get these out to our new members as well as anyone who would like to have some extras. The remaining shirts will be stored in the Hotline and can be purchased on Thursdays, when the hotline has volunteers working.

September Chapter Meeting Details and Help Needed
The September chapter meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 12 from 6-8 pm at the Botanical Center. The educational topic will be ‘Winterizing Garden Supplies’ and will take place in the Demo Garden. This will be followed by an inside potluck and business meeting.
Food assignments for this month – If your last name begins with letters A – M, it is your turn to bring snacks. Since we will be in the gardens before we eat (and so will our kitchen crew), please bring ready-to-eat food that doesn’t need to be prepped, cooked, or heated.
Here’s how the evening will work:
-Drop off food inside the Botanical Center meeting room upon arrival.
-Be in the Demo Garden ready to start at 6 pm.
-We will have 3 stations you will be rotating through. You will spend 15 minutes at each station.
-The stations will be as follows:
1) Hand pruner/lopper sharpening (each Master Gardener member can bring one pair of loppers or hand pruners to be sharpened).
2) Flower pot and tool sanitation – you will learn about sanitizing tools and flower pots including clay, plastic, and glazed
3) Winter storage of lawn mowers – you will learn the basics of preparing your mower for winter
-You are welcome to bring a lawn chair if you would like.
-In case of rain, we will be doing this inside the meeting room.
Help Needed:
This will be a fun evening and help is needed to make it a success.
Help is needed in the following areas:
-Need one more person to bring and run a grinder or blade sharpener at the sharpening station
-Need one or two people to bring and demonstrate winterization of a lawn mower.
-Need 3 people to monitor time at each station and move groups along as needed.
-If interested in helping, please contact Kelly McGowan at mcgowank@missouri.edu or 417-874-2955.

Cereal Boxes Wanted for the Eclipse on October 14
We are going to make eclipse viewers in September and October and wanted to see if the Master Gardeners could save cereal boxes? It’s the easiest way to see the eclipse without glasses. They can drop them off at the botanical center for the staff to put in my office. If they have any questions, they can call my office, 874-2948. Thanks!
