National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week – April 9-15
As in most communities across the nation, the Rowlett Police Department’s Communication Officers are the voice of 9-1-1. They are the first public safety officials a citizen speaks to in a moment of crisis. Communication Officers are highly trained specialists capable of quickly and efficiently getting a citizen the necessary police, fire, or medical assistance. Our dedicated Communication Officers work behind the scenes and are a critical part of the Police and Fire teams. They are on duty 24-hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, providing rapid access to Police and Fire services, as well as calm, reassuring voices to citizens in distress. Our exemplary staff was recognized by proclamation at the April 4 City Council meeting, but we’ll celebrate them all week long!

Autism Acceptance and Parkinson’s Awareness Month
April was recognized by proclamation at this week’s City Council Meeting as Autism Acceptance Month and Parkinson’s Awareness Month in the City of Rowlett.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex, lifelong developmental condition that typically appears during early childhood and can impact a person’s social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate 1 in 44 children has been identified with ASD.
Parkinson’s Disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that the Parkinson’s Foundation estimates someone new will be diagnosed with in the United States every 6 minutes, or an estimated 90,000 new cases every year. Early signs include tremors, smaller handwriting than in the past, loss of smell, trouble sleeping, trouble moving or walking, and stooping or hunched over while standing. Rowlett’s historic downtown water tower will be lit in red, white and green on World Parkinson's Day, celebrated on April 11 –the birthdate of Dr. James Parkinson, who first identified the disease about 200 years ago.
