The Memorial Day Red Poppy

The tradition of using red poppies as a symbol of Memorial day dates back to 1915. A Ms. Moina Michael responded to a famous poem by John McCrae with one of her own:

"We cherish too, the Poppy red

That grows on fields where valor led,

It seems to signal to the skies

That blood of heroes never dies."

She began the tradition of wearing a red poppy in remembrance of those who had died in war, and sold them to her friends to make money to help benefit servicemen in need. A stamp was later created to commemorate her work.

Later, a french woman named Madame Guerin learned of Ms. Michael's custom on visiting the United states. When she returned home to France she began making artificial red poppies to raise money for war orphaned children and widowed women.

The tradition continues to this day, and has spread to Canada, the United States, Great Britain, and Australia.
