NEW ARRIVALS THIS WEEK...
GOLDEN YEARS (Switzerland) — A retired couple is getting ready to enjoy their life as pensioners on a cruise trip through the Mediterranean. The spouses end up going on separate journeys of self-discovery and finding unexpected ways of how to spend their golden years. This comic-drama opened our 2023 MV International Film Festival and was an audience favorite.
SCIENCE ON SCREEN® – LINOLEUM with Guest Speaker Dr. Philip Metzger. Prior to the film, Planetary Scientist Dr. Philip Metzger will give a presentation entitled "The Tragedy of the Commons in Space: Navigating the Growing Problems of Orbital Debris."
In LINOLEUM, Cameron Edwin (Jim Gaffigan), the host of a failing children’s science TV show called “Above & Beyond”, has always had aspirations of being an astronaut. After a mysterious space-race era satellite coincidentally falls from space and lands in his backyard, his midlife crisis manifests in a plan to rebuild the machine into his dream rocket.
A PASSION FOR OYSTERS with panel discussion and oyster bar reception afterwards, sponsored by Tisbury Waterways, Inc. A film about oysters? Sure, oysters aren’t much to look at. You could say they are true and literal sticks in the mud. Yet these humble bivalves have inspired piracy, shooting wars and centuries of social and environmental conflict. Sandy Cannon-Brown, a producer and the editor of "A Passion for Oysters", is a resident of Vineyard Haven. She moved to Vineyard Haven in 2020 from the Chesapeake Bay, where she and her partners – writer Tom Horton and photographer Dave Harp – made many notable films about the Bay.
CONTINUING THIS WEEK...
PERFECT DAYS (Japan) — Directed by Win Wenders, Academy Award nominee for Best International Picture (Japan). Hirayama (Koji Yashuko) feels content with his life as a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. Outside of his structured routine, he cherishes music on cassette tapes, reads books and takes photos. Through unexpected encounters, he reflects on finding beauty in the world.
AMERICAN FICTION — Nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor (Jeffrey Wright). AMERICAN FICTION is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.
OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS: DOCUMENTARY, LIVE ACTION, AND ANIMATION. For the 19th consecutive year, the MV Film Society presents the Oscar-Nominated Short Films. With all three categories offered – Animated, Live Action and Documentary – this is your annual chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar pool)! A perennial hit with audiences around the country and the world, don’t miss this year’s selection of shorts. The Academy Awards take place Sunday, March 10th.
COMING ATTRACTIONS...
With a special introduction from local artist Elizabeth Whelan
This dazzling film takes a magical journey from the gallery to the gardens, to Giverny and Seebüll and other glorious grounds favoured by artists. Here we discover how early twentieth century artists designed and cultivated their own gardens to explore contemporary utopian ideas and motifs of colour and form.
