During a visit to Brooklyn, New York, Joan and Marc Plisko happened upon an amazing farmers market. In addition to buying local produce, residents brought their food scraps to the farmers market for compost. As part of GrowNYC, which is the sustainability resource for New Yorkers, residents are provided free tools and services to improve the city and the environment. Check it out!
Bringing food scraps to the farmers market in Brooklyn
Rooftop Honey at Marriott Brooklyn Bridge coffee shop (above); and 4th floor roof hive (below)
Buzzzzzzz
After a lovely walk along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade (aka the Esplanade), Joan and Marc Plisko returned to the Marriott Brooklyn Bridge for a morning beverage. Having seen beehives on the fourth floor rooftop, it was a pleasant surprise to find Rooftop Honey in the lobby coffee shop. According to the barista, the Marriott has two beehives and approximately 2,000 bees.
The hotel became interested in the valuable contribution bees make to the ecosystem and wanted to do their part in sustaining the pollination process.
Similarly, a rooftop farm in the Brooklyn Navy Yard teaches urbanites the secret to raising bees and harvesting their honey. Brooklyn Grange keeps 30 beehives at different rooftop locations throughout the city, and its bee classes are among its most popular events.
