Calhoun County, MI - Children and teens can now ride their bicycles safely with the protection of a new helmet, courtesy of the Calhoun County Public Health Department (CCPHD). The CCPHD proudly announces the launch of a free bike helmet program dedicated to enhancing the safety of children in our community. Beginning Monday, June 17th, CCPHD will provide free bike helmets to children and teens in need, ensuring each young bike enthusiast can enjoy safe cycling.
The CCPHD asks interested families to fill out a bike helmet request form to help our staff with inventory management. Please fill out the online request form if you or someone you know may be interested in receiving a free bike helmet. Following receipt of the form, a CCPHD staff member will contact families in 1-3 business days to schedule an appointment to have their child properly sized for the correct helmet. Educational materials and videos about properly fitting a bike helmet and bicyclist road safety will be shared with each family who receives a helmet. Bike Helmet Request Form
Helmets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Appointments Only.
Bike riding is a fun and healthy activity that promotes physical health and time outdoors, but safety should always come first. Wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of head injuries in bicycle accidents, making it an essential piece of protective gear for young riders. Children and adults are encouraged to wear a properly fitting helmet in all-wheeled sports: bicycling, skateboarding, skating, and scootering.
“Injury prevention through health promotion is a cornerstone to public health practice. Properly fitted bike helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries by 45%. It’s important for both children and adults to wear one every time they go out for a ride. We’re very excited that through this initiative, families can safely enjoy time outdoors on their bikes this summer.” said Community Public Health Director Lauren Lewandowski.
The Calhoun County Public Health Department currently has 1,600 bike helmets to give to community members. Please stay tuned to CCPHD’s Facebook page for announcements of upcoming giveaway events.
