The Franz Robert Trio:

A benefit concert to help raise funds for Franz's attendance

at Manhattan School of Music.

If anyone understands the art of the Jazz Piano Trio, it is 17-year-old pianist Franz Robert.  He has been transcribing (listening to and learning improvised solos note for note) the piano masters in order to understand how they work their magic. From the creators of the "modern jazz style," like McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Joe Zawinul to the "bebop masters" like Bud Powell and Barry Harris, even back to the pianists who came up through the stride tradition, like Monk, Ellington and Teddy Wilson, Franz has studied them all and absorbed their idiosyncratic vocabularies to create his own unique style.

Music is inseparable from Franz's persona, but what is truly remarkable is his commitment to learning, listening and getting to the heart of the musical essence and then conveying that distilled message to others using the piano as his means of expression.  Franz Robert has worked hard to develop his astounding technique, yet he understands that virtuosity is only one of many tools that serve his ability to communicate through music. Ultimately, he presents a profound understanding of what is beautiful and shares this revelation with his audience using his almost mystical relationship with sound.

Franz will be performing with other young musicians that share his passion including bassist Gus Kohlin and drummer Benny Woodard.  He has worked with this trio for a long time, so they share a special vocabulary and have the capacity to communicate telepathically at times.

This is a concert not to be missed.  It is also an opportunity for us all to contribute to a most worthy cause: Franz Robert's Educational Fund. The performance will take place at the Centre Congregational Church in downtown Brattleboro on Friday, July 24th at 6:00 PM. This concert is free and open to the public.

100% of the donations will go towards helping pay for Franz Robert's attendance at the Manhattan School of music this fall and are strongly encouraged.
