RN Appreciation Week and National RN Day
A Brief History
When I think of nurses, I think of an amazing breadth of knowledge and training. I think of empathetic and well-educated individuals who are wise, who give amazing advice, and who seem to truly know all the answers to even the most challenging of medical questions.
But did you know that nurses were once viewed as just "doctors' assistants"? This is difficult to fathom, as our nurses today are highly specialized individuals with a wide range of skills. Becoming a nurse is a grueling process. It takes four years of study and dedication, resilience and focus. Because of this, our nurses are a vital link between doctors and patients, and often more accessible and knowledgeable when it comes to each patient and their very individualized needs.
Florence Nightingale was the mother of modern nursing. She laid the groundwork and the foundation for today's professionals. Because of her dedication and her seemingly boundless stores of energy, she paved the way for hygiene protocols on the frontlines of the Crimean War. These protocols led to reduced infections and death of soldiers who were injured in battle.
The International Council of Nurses helped to establish National Nurse's Day in 1974. Today, we celebrate our nurses for an entire week, the start of which is National Nurse's Day, which this year falls on May 6th.
Our nursing staff here at Franklin VNA and Hospice are very special, indeed. They work tirelessly to provide comfort and care to all of our home care patients. They are resilient, positive, dedicated, and incredibly knowledgeable. While we are grateful for them every day, we would like to take this opportunity in May to give them a very special, very loud SHOUT OUT for everything they do!
