FROM PARENT TO
PRINCIPLE-CONSCIOUSNESS
By Rev. Dr. Arthur Chang
Evolution in general, and what our lives are in particular, share a common principle—the principle of growth. Although biological forms have eons of time to develop individual forms do not. We humans, for example, possess a high degree of consciousness for learning and for directing principles to achieve a high degree of evolution in our lifetime.
Human life begins with a child-state requiring a high degree of dependence upon parents for our survival. Our immense curiosity about our novel surroundings is matched only by our ignorance of it. Here, the godlike parental-rule that protects us insists on obedience.
Our development from childhood to adulthood contains the necessary transitioning threshold that inevitably leads to the conflict with parental authority that coming of age young adults experience. The Hebrew myth of Adam and Eve poetically lays out the crossing of this threshold of which theologian Augustine unfortunately misrendered the pair’s eating of the forbidden fruit as “disobedience” to God. Thus, a natural growth threshold was labeled by bad theology as “original sin” and “the fall of man.”
Reading the Scriptures as prose is like viewing a beautiful landscape through a fully developed cataract. The language of Scripture is poetry. A prosaic mindset is apt to miss the soul-vision of this vital lesson, which is human growth in this instance. In the Garden of Eden, “the tree of knowledge of good and evil” signifies a critical threshold of growth from child to adult consciousness. It is a time-release experience. As stem cells in our bodies trigger critical periods of growth, so does puberty, a consciousness stem cell, trigger a quantum leap toward becoming self-responsible adults.
Puberty is the cosmic announcement of our becoming adults where shedding parental-reliance for self-reliance occurs. “Eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil,” means we must now be guided by principle and not by the personalities of our parents. The following insight by Paul applies, “When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” (1 Corinthians 14:11) The universal aim is not one of producing “obedient children” but of producing “self-responsible and spiritually mature adults.”
Growth from child to adult-consciousness means going from parental governance to principle-directed governance. Principles are the only unchanging aspects of our universe. Principles are how the universe works. Thus, principles give us individual access to the universal creative process where we can bring our dreams into reality as well as positively or negatively affect our health. This potential is an aspect of our soul-activity. Consciously creating our world requires more than an intelligent understanding of principle. Principle must be energized by thoughts, deeply felt. The Eden myth says symbolically, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife…” (Gen. 2:24) While this statement is true of our reproduction process, it is true also at the metaphysical level of creating our dreams whether in healing, achieving our purpose or in any way that fulfills our lives.
Nevertheless, in applying principles as adults, we will make mistakes. A deeper insight into how we are using principle will allow us to correct our mistakes and become more successful at living. Mistakes are part of the learning process of which is said, “Even a bad thing can be a vehicle to a better place.”
This short article can only begin to uncover a smidgen of the wealth of meaning that has been lost to countless generations because of the mistaken sin/disobedience interpretation of the Adam and Eve human developmental story. However, it is my hope that this article will begin to remove some of the cataract of the prose mindset that has blinded us from seeing its truer poetic meaning. In this way, we will appreciate the poetic nuances of our creative human journey from child to adult consciousness and experience more empowerment and freedom from any guilt imposed by labeling a natural process as “original sin.”
The universal aim is for our lives to go from parent-consciousness to principle-consciousness.

Ernest's Corner
Whatever the nature of any principle may be—in so far as it is understood by anyone—it may be understood by all who take the time to investigate. This does not require an unusual degree of intelligence, but, rather, a practical application of what we now know in order that we may increase our knowledge. The study of the Science of Mind is a study of First Cause, Spirit, Mind, or that invisible Essence, that ultimate Stuff and Intelligence from which everything comes, the Power back of creation—the Thing Itself.

How to Quiet Your Mind
Medically Reviewed by Carmelita Swiner, MD on November 30, 2022
Written by Paul Frysh
Breathe
We do this all the time, but to use your breathing to find stillness, be more careful and conscious about it. Pay attention to the rhythm. If you take short, quick breaths, try to move toward slower, deeper ones. Put your hand on your belly: You should feel it rise and expand as you draw air in, and fall as you let it out. Shoot for about six breaths a minute.
Exercise
Just 5 minutes of aerobic exercise, like a brisk walk, could start to calm your mind. It releases endorphins -- chemicals that make you feel good and can help improve your mood, focus, and sleep. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can give you a big dose of them in a short time. After warming up, alternate 20- to 30-second bursts of pushing yourself hard (like doing sprints, squats, or fast weightlifting) with equal amounts of rest.
Listen to Music
It literally calms the activity in your brain. Fewer neurons fire in your amygdala (the part of your brain that responds to fear), which may lead to fewer signals sent to other parts of your brain. Music is a good thing to try if you're distracted by pain. Listen closely, not just as background. The more you notice, the less you'll dwell on your other thoughts.
Go Outdoors
Being in and around nature often makes people think more clearly and feel more relaxed and refreshed. Your brain doesn't have to work as hard in a greener environment. In one study, after 20 minutes in a park, children with ADHD were able to concentrate better. Spending time outside can also bring down your heart rate, blood pressure, stress hormones, and even muscle tension.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Use the connection with your body to soothe your mind. Pick a body part -- foot, leg, mouth, eyes -- and tense it for a few seconds. Then release and relax for 10 seconds or so. Notice how that feels different. Switch to another part, and keep going until you've done your whole body. This can also improve sleep and may even ease headaches and stomachaches.
Guided Imagery
Think of a favorite spot, real or imagined, that makes you calm and happy: perhaps a beach at sunset, a comfy chair in front of a fireplace, or a stream in the forest. Focus on details. Can you smell pine needles, for example? See bubbles in the water? Hear the gurgle and splashing? There are audio recordings and apps that can help you through this process.
Hatha Yoga
This mix of challenging poses and controlled breathing helps you turn your awareness to being in the present moment instead of judging yourself and others. There's also evidence that a regular practice lessens anxiety and takes the edge off your natural stress response. Plus, it's exercise that builds your strength and flexibility. Go to a class, and you'll get the benefits of socializing with other people, too.
Dig in the Dirt
It's not just the great outdoors and the exercise at work here. The soil itself has microorganisms that might help you focus and lift your mood. Gardeners are less depressed and anxious, and they feel more connected to their communities.
