Grants in Action

Featuring Bowie MS and Colony Meadows ES

Not Your Grandma's Library

Bowie Middle School’s library provides various resources and opportunities for students to explore and apply the information they acquire by completing innovative STEM projects. With $4,876 in funding for her school site grant, “Not Your Grandma’s Library,” Shelly Puckett purchased a 3-D printer and supporting hardware for all students to access. Students use the printer to create projects promoting skills and interests in robotics, architecture, medical sciences and other content areas.

Generating Geniuses

During “Genius Hour,” Colony Meadows Elementary first grade students take part in hands-on, open-ended activities to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Given a $1,491 teacher grant, first-grade team members purchased learning materials – including Snap-Bots, Log Builders and Playstix – to help students explore, build, discover, and create masterpieces to enhance their learning. Students design robots or build bridges, vehicles, houses and other creative projects.
