Grants In Action

Spotlighting Ridge Point HS, Dulles MS, Lantern Lane ES and Madden ES

Digital Art and Art I students at Ridge Point High School are benefiting from a $1,488 teacher grant awarded to team members Jinny Pham, Laura Angeles, Jalyssa Ortiz and Taylor Farmilette. Funding for their “Creativity is One Click Away” grant allowed them to purchase pen tablet and mouse sets. The students use the tools to create digital artwork, original designs, media content and animations for contests, art shows and classroom projects.

Given a $4,493 team grant, teachers Bonnie Holt, Travis Davis and Moyin Yusuf purchased new microscopes and slides to support science learning at Dulles Middle School. Through the “Need to Make New Cellfies” grant, 7th and 8th grade science students are gaining a better understanding and appreciation of science as they examine cells, genetics, ecology, geology, life cycles and biological kingdoms. Gotta love these young scientists in the making!

Lantern Lane Elementary students are using Lego Spike Prime sets to become "Implementers of Automation and Planning," thanks to a $1,347 grant awarded to Belinda James. By creating functional Lego models, students utilize math and science skills by using various angles to measure vertex degrees and problem-solving logic to compare pulleys and engines. Through the hands-on activities, the students are developing skills in coding, robotics, problem solving and creativity.

Two Bits, Four Bits, Let's Create Hands-on STEM Bits! Madden Elementary teachers Ruth Schmalz and Theresa Grahmann received a $1,413 grant to fund the purchase of STEM kits for Prek-2 grade students. The students are gaining hands-on learning experiences and building science skills while learning about force, momentum, gravity, and cause and effect. By working together with their peers, the students are also gaining communication and problem-solving skills.
