Keeping in the Loop

North Pool Update

Dear Residents,

Great progress has been made at our North Pool, though it may not be immediately evident to the naked eye. Consider this: Crumbling concrete was removed from the walls of the pool and concrete forms were placed around the entire pool. A truck (or two!) of concrete was poured into these forms to repair the crumbling wall. Three hundred and eighty six coping stones have been meticulously laid using leveling instruments. Over 1400 water line tiles, 6 new racing lane lines, and 12 wall targets were cut and laid. Ten of the skimmers were replaced. Every aspect of this undertaking must be executed with a keen focus on precision, ensuring that every measurement is correct. We've had two crews working 5-6 days a week on our pool - which is twice the size of a "normal" pool!

What's next? Grouting in between all of the coping stones was completed yesterday. Power washing, acid washing, and caulking the coping stones around the perimeter of the pool and the expansion joint are the next steps. We have found that our cement deck has sunk..so grouting will be very tricky here! After all of this is complete, applying the all-important bonding coat to the entire pool surface will take place. Once the bond coat is in place, the pool will be plastered and filled. So. Here comes the hard part. The pool will need to sit with water in it for a few days until the pH is balanced. Without this balance, the water is too alkaline for swimming as it leads to burning eyes and skin rashes.

As many of you know I'm not going to give an opening date (I'm a strong believer in the power of a jinx!). BUT, as soon as I have a firm date you all will be the first to know!

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this process. Should you have further questions, please do not hesitate to call or email the FLCA Office. Or stop by - we're always glad to see you!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

2024 Pool Entry - Now through Membersplash

This will be the LAST announcement regarding Membersplash! So far, our new system has worked well! If you have any questions or comments - please let us know.

Membersplash is our new pool entry system. Below are some helpful notes, instructions and the link to start your account.

  • Unless you are registering a nanny/babysitter or are a Legacy member, the "UNPAID ACCOUNT" does not apply to you. This has nothing to do with your HOA dues!!!
  • Only your household members who live with you can be registered. Any fraudulent entries will not be approved and your account will remain inactive.
  • Every household member must have a current head-shot picture. This is how you will be identified at check-in - no app or pool cards necessary. Make sure it looks like YOU!
  • Once you have registered your household members your account will be approved by the FLCA office. Once it is approved, you may not make changes without coming into the office.
  • Need help? You can call the FLCA office with questions or to make an appointment to have us help you set up your account. 434/973.4596.
  • For the definition of a Legacy and Nanny account, please see February's newsletter.

Dogs on Leashes - Please!

To all dog owners......Please keep your dogs on a leash when walking outside your property. Not only is this in the Forest Lakes Rules and Regulations, it's an Albemarle County law as well. No matter how "nice" your dog is, or how well it is trained it needs to be on a leash. Thank you!

BLUEBIRD UPDATE

Of the 16 Bluebird houses on our "Forest Lakes Bluebird Trail" we've had approximately 45 babies fledge. There are still 42 eggs left to hatch! Successful year so far!

We do have some concerning news - there have been children shaking and tampering with the houses. Witnesses have seen them take the protective cover off the house and shake the poles leaving the house unsteady. Parents, please talk to your kids and make sure they are not the ones doing this! Thank you John Oliver for repairing the damaged houses.

Another predator to bluebird houses is house sparrows - they'll fly in and kill baby and adult bluebirds. You may see some shiny strips of mylar balloons flying above some of our houses. This is to keep the sparrows out - the bluebirds don't mind the shine above their homes!

Thank you to all of our volunteers and our volunteer coordinator, Carolyn Huyghe, for taking care of the houses.

WHAT ARE THOSE BLACK CABLES IN OUR ROADS?

Wonder what the black cables that are across many of our roads are? According to VDOT, they are pneumatic road tubes that have been placed in strategic areas to simply count traffic. This is part of their road study program. It's all good.
