SAVANT HOSTS SHARON L. SHERMAN’S ‘DESIGN MEETS INNOVATION’ KBIS 2024 RECAP

By Diana Mosher -- NKBA Manhattan Chapter members earned CEU credit while enjoying KBIS 2024 highlights at the March Chapter Meeting hosted by Savant in their SoHo Experience Center. Following a lively cocktail hour, Greg Barrett kicked-off the event with an update on Savant’s energy management and storage systems exhibited at KBIS. These offerings are designed to meet the challenges created by natural disasters and an aging power grid. At KBIS, Savant also announced their partnership with GE smart appliances and commitment to the net zero home.

Undoubtedly, technology and design are becoming more intertwined, and examples were prevalent at KBIS 2024, according to Sharon L Sherman, ASID, CKD, CID, NCIDQ, Owner of Thyme & Place Design in Wykoff, NJ. Sharon’s KBIS recap focused on the intersection of design and innovation as well as the ever-growing crossover of kitchen and bath design with interior design. Her key-takeaways from KBIS 2024 were: color is back, curves are still sexy, sustainability matters, and technology is key.

Sharon showed examples of capsule shapes seen repeatedly on the KBIS show floor. Even cabinet hardware is adopting the capsule shape. Sharon noted that finding a rectangular tub took a lot of work. Farm sinks and vessel sinks are still popular, and exquisite hand-painted Murano vessel sinks at Native Trails showed the elevation of design. Thompson Traders’ exhibited a range hood that resembled folded fabric. According to Sharon, artisanship and “the story behind the product” are coming back.

The fish scale shape was everywhere, and so was color—on Kohler’s variety of green tubs and sinks, appliances, cabinets, and hardware. Richelieu made a splash with their round, colorful pulls. Bright, shiny metals and high lacquer finishes are also trending. And metal cabinets are coming back. Sharon noted that the “coastal grandma” look (pattern on pattern on pattern plus color all over everything) is still here, but so are neutral palettes that rely on sophisticated hues, including True Residential’s new champagne finish.

Curved cabinets in the kitchen and bath are also trending. There were also many curved range hoods and metal hoods. Natural stone is more popular than ever, and enormous slabs with out-of-the-ordinary colors and patterns were displayed at KBIS. Some designers are revisiting the full-stone backsplash. They are also looking for opportunities to backlight natural stone to showcase its beauty and create a sense of drama.

Technology is driving sustainability and changing how we live—like the home composter introduced by Krause or the wrapping of lighting around a base molding to assist wayfinding. Installing outlets with USB cables in vanities eliminates the need to install outlets on the beautiful backsplash wall. Which of these trends seen at KBIS 2024 will you share with your own kitchen and bath design clients?

Thank you to Savant for hosting and Sharon L. Sherman for sharing her insights with the NKBA Manhattan Chapter! If you still need to become a member, join our Chapter to attend our monthly informative, fun networking events; visit our Newsletter to keep up on events.

NEW YORK CITY BLOOMS WITH A FOCUS ON DESIGN & SUSTAINABILITY AS SPRING TAKES CENTER STAGE!"

As international events unfold on both sides of the Atlantic, New York City and Europe become hubs of activity. From the eco-conscious festivities of Earth Day's sustainability initiatives to the innovative showcases of NYCxDesign, ICFF International, High Point Market, and EuroCucina-Salone del Mobile–Milano are among the notable gatherings that fill the air with excitement.

Before discussing forthcoming events, let's revisit the March KBIS RECAP Chapter Meeting at the Savant Soho Experience Center. This month's newsletter brilliantly reviews the immersive experience and captivating insights captured in Sharon Sherman’s “Designer POV: KBIS 2024” presentation. Slides from the presentation and the event appear in the article. And another KBIS follow-up, this one gaining valuable insights from NKBA CEO Bill Darcy's State of the Association (SOA) address. His reflections and data may pleasantly surprise you.

This year, six of our chapter sponsors proudly claimed Best of KBIS awards, with two even achieving the prestigious BEST IN SHOW accolade. Our talented videographer has expertly captured these successes in videos showcasing these award-winning sponsor products. Visit The NKBA Manhattan-NYC YouTube Channel. We encourage you to explore these videos and extend your support by liking and engaging with them.

We Are Eager To Embrace The Spirit Of Spring And The Prevailing Themes Of Sustainability And Design.

In alignment with the NKBA's Commitment To Sustainability, we proudly salute Sustainability Month throughout April. Join us in celebrating Earth Day at our Gold Sponsor Dacor's showroom on April 18th, where we will engage in meaningful conversations about sustainability practices. This month's member spotlight shines brightly on a member who has long championed sustainability personally and professionally. With a distinguished history as a past Secretary/Treasurer of our board, she brings a wealth of international perspective to the table, advocating for responsible citizenship of our planet.

As we transition into May, the design scene erupts with excitement as NYCxDesign and the ICFF International Trade Fair take center stage. Our Gold Sponsor, Subzero, invites you to our chapter meeting on May 16th, where we'll delve into the latest design trends from both sides of the Atlantic. A panel of esteemed designers will share insights gleaned from recent trade fair excursions to Paris, Milan, Germany, and the USA. Moderated by Aspire Home Magazine's editorial director, this promises to be an enriching evening.

Let's not overlook the upcoming 23rd Greenwich Village Annual Spring House Tours and the iconic 49th KIPS BAY Decorator Showhouse. JennAir is generously sponsoring an exclusive NKBA Manhattan Members Only Breakfast and tour of Kips Bay, while Sponsors Savant & Clerestory have exciting plans for a designer evening affair. Mark your calendars and prepare for an array of engaging events and experiences awaiting you.

In the aftermath of the exhilarating yet exhausting KBIS trade fair, our dedicated board officers and council have been tirelessly at work. Numerous initiatives have already been set in motion to enhance our organization's impact and further its reach. Further, under the leadership of Rose Ott, our Advocacy Subcommittee orchestrated a volunteer afternoon at God's Love We Deliver (GLWD) to give back to the community.

Meanwhile, our Membership & Programs team is rolling out a new non-member meeting fee policy. We encourage our members to invite guests complimentary, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in our community-building efforts.

President, NKBA-NYC Chapter

Meet Felicitas Oefelein, F O DESIGN

By Diana Mosher -- April is NKBA Sustainability Month, and we’re excited to feature NKBA Manhattan Chapter member Felicitas Oefelein, owner of F O DESIGN. Felicitas began her green journey as a child growing up in Germany, where there was talk about acid rain, and she first became concerned about the environment. “We often think of the transport, manufacturing of clothing, and animal agriculture sectors as being the culprits for global pollution,” says Felicitas. “But the building sector is one of the largest offenders. Being part of this industry, I see a great chance to make a difference and turn things around for the better.” Read the rest of our interview with Felicitas below.

What are some of the ways you’ve furthered sustainability?

This month, I attended Climate Reality Project leadership training in New York. It’s a program that was started by Al Gore in 2006, and I was very excited to participate. Since I have space in my home, I also hosted a few activists for the weekend. In 2020, while serving as NKBA Manhattan Chapter Treasurer, I applied for and received an ECO Grant from National NKBA. We used $1,000 as a donation for the organization Community Solidarity, and also our Chapter gave out the first-ever ECO awards to some of our sponsors. They had to fill out a questionnaire answering what their firms did in regard to sustainability.

Why did you become a designer?

I knew early on that I wanted to be a designer. My Barbie dolls lived in a triplex penthouse in the bookcase, and my smaller stuffed animals inhabited shoebox condos. Being a teenager in a rather rustic parental home that did not exactly fit my own vision of a stylish interior was certainly not easy, and to this day, I am grateful that I actually get paid to do what I love most: designing beautiful homes for my clients.

Were there way fewer green product choices when you first became a designer?

Absolutely. Many renewable materials such as cork and bamboo have been around for a long time. But today we can purchase cabinet handles made from upcycled ocean plastic. How amazing is this! I just bought a wonderful rug made from recycled PET yarn for my own living room. I am not sure I want to call myself a green designer. It's a path at best. I strive to be “greener” and to make the best choices I can for my clients and also for myself. But I also acknowledge that at this point nothing is 100 percent and we have a long way to go yet.

Why did you join NKBA Manhattan Chapter?

Kent Brasloff recommended the NKBA to me. I attended a meeting and loved it from the start—the community of people and strong ties to the industry. Being a small business owner can sometimes be isolating, and it’s fun to get out and have the support of peers on an ongoing basis.

Tell us about your Industry City project.

I have teamed up with fellow NKBA Manhattan member Sami Kelmendi to create an ECO center in Brooklyn’s Industry City. Sami took on an amazing 4,000 sq. ft. loft space on the waterfront. We see the need for a space that is both a resource center for clients and also industry professionals as well as an event space. Think of it as "one stop shopping" for the eco-conscious consumer. Whether you are only looking for a material—or are looking for a full-on home renovation—this will be the place to find help.

You’re headed to Milan. Why is it important for designers to travel?

I find it extremely important to get out there to see what others are up to. I visit local places like the New York Botanical Gardens. I also visit Germany two to three times a year because my father lives there. In general, I feel that Europe has a more modern and contemporary approach to design and more of a focus on sustainability than the U.S. I can’t wait to see what products and innovations are available at Milan Design Week. Right afterwards I’m headed to Germany to visit my dad to celebrate his 92nd birthday!

NKBA | KBIS GLOBAL PRESIDENT & CEO BILL DARCY DELIVERED THE STATE OF THE ASSOCIATION ADDRESS TO THE ASSOCIATION’S MEMBERSHIP AT KBIS 2024

Las Vegas, February 2024 -- Bill Darcy, Global President & CEO of NKBA | KBIS, gave an inspiring State of the Association (SOA) address to members in Las Vegas. Darcy also announced that the Design & Construction Week co-location agreement between NKBA | KBIS and NAHB will be extended through 2030.

Darcy talked about KBIS's impact on the kitchen and bath industry. “This year, we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of KBIS. That’s six decades of a kitchen and bath show that only keeps getting bigger and more successful since the first show debuted in 1964 in Philadelphia, where we had 24 exhibitors and 250 attendees,” said Darcy. “I’d say we’ve come a long way, considering we now have nearly 700 exhibitors spanning almost 500,000 square feet of exhibit hall space.”

To read more about Darcy’s SOA, read Elisa Fernández-Arias key-takeaways from his speech about the health of the kitchen and bath industry here.

THIS WEEK IN 2012 AT NBKA MANHATTAN

It's March 2012 in New York City. The weather for the St. Patty's Day parade rose above 60o, something that was considered exceptional at the time. Kentucky had just defeated Kansas in the men’s N.C.A.A. to win their first national championship since Tubby Smith led the team there in 1998. The Republican primaries were a heated race between Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich. And The Hunger Games battled The Lorax and the box office.

In an arena that was less of a battle, NKBA Manhattan boldly ventured into social media, launching their Facebook page and newly designed website. The first story on March 7, 2012 – “Are you registered for our Third Annual Forum for Designers on March 13?” On the website, JennAir was looking for projects to showcase on their Facebook page, and National had debuted their new TV commercial!
