The project focus continues to be on completing all the necessary changes needed to the floor. The flooring has now been removed exposing the floor joists. This was necessary to enable visual inspection by the consulting engineers and marble flooring contractor.
With this step accomplished the flooring contractor was able to take the preliminary measurements necessary to begin preparing the marble at their facility in New Jersey. Soon they will begin implementing suggested alterations to the floor structure and working to overcome floor level imperfections that are part of a 125 year old plus structure. The good news is that these experts judge the floor overall to be in excellent condition.
While the floor joists are exposed the old knob and tube electrical wiring, and other old systems will be removed and new electrical and AV cabling and conduit will be installed.
Once these steps are completed the flooring contractor will be establishing a proper sub-floor for the eventual installation of the marble, likely to begin in late September. This sub-floor is also needed to support the lifts that will be used for the lighting system to be installed in the Sanctuary and transition to the Nave during Phase 1A.
In the Sanctuary, the flooring contractors will be creating a new predella, replacing the one that was removed. This is the platform on which the Altar and other furnishing will reside, and will also be floored with marble.
Our goal is to create a welcoming environment that supports the various liturgies that occur within it, is balanced and appropriate for a Basilica, follows current liturgical guidelines, and respects the history of Sacred Heart.
