Volume 220

June 12, 2024

Our 3rd Circle of Competence to achieve Peak Performance within Senior Living Communities (SLC) is Activities. Last week’s issue centered on Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and now we explore mission-critical motives to engage residents in pleasurable or intellectually stimulating ways.

To humanistic first principles, what does research* indicate about Activating Significance in Senior Living Communities?

“Engagement in activities beyond routine primary care is an important indicator of quality of life in nursing homes. Having ‘choice of activities’ and ‘activities that amount to something’ is important for improving a sense of independence and positive self-image in nursing home residents.” 1

“The more cognitively and functionally dependent elders are, the more activities become critical to their lives. Activities most missed by elders with disability are often leisure activities.” 2

“Excessive unoccupied time among nursing home residents is evident in studies that have found that they ‘do nothing’ 65% of the time 3 and can spend 17 hours a day in bed 4 when awake or not receiving treatment or primary care.”

With therapeutic intentions, Activity Directors engage and lead SLC residents in educational or recreational pursuits. Since residents’ preferences vary, creating diverse schedules requires detailed planning. Observing some participants enjoy “the same old thing,” others may seek something new. Notably, across the board, better hearing can aid healthy socialization. In this sense, our dual-purpose goal piques communal interest in Joys of Hearing that also encourages conversational interactions, such as in The Dining Room as featured last week.

Assessing residents’ medical needs and entertaining favorites guides thriving activity development, with Lunch & Learn’s comorbidity education On the Menu. With Better Hearing, Better Community aims, focal topics include:

  • Dementia
  • Risk of Falls
  • Vision Loss
  • Heart Disease
  • Depression
  • Communication Strategies

While the idea of “giving educational talks” is frequently considered, having customized presentations readily available empowers progressive practices to showcase their subject matter expertise. Instead of anguishing for weeks or months about “putting something together,” carefully crafted solutions are @ your fingertips. In fact, Activity Directors seeking something new will appreciate Hearing the Facts about why well-informed Super Seniors will be better hearing health partners, for life.

Imagine the life-changing possibilities triggered and opportunities to scale by sharing an introductory piece like this:

The Activity Director’s epiphany reveals when they excitedly say something like…

“So you are eager to expertly deliver reputable educational information to our residents and answer their related questions?”

Getting to Yes on this pivotal point will open minds and doors. Ready, willing, and able is a proactive way to grow.

In the spirit of sharing, here’s a sample of an All-In-One (topic style) Lunch & Learn presentation.

As you will also see, featured early on are these motivational quotes:

“With hearing health information, you gain important insight.”

“When our personal vision is sharp and balanced, it awakens our ability to look at life with a creative and positive point of view. It stimulates our thirst for knowledge and education in every possible way.”

– Sonia Choquette

By design, 20 creative slides capture attention with an upbeat tone and logical flow. Something different, that’s for sure.

As enthused presentations conclude, confident clinicians pre-arrange Clean & Checks for those already owning hearing aids. When thoughtfully planned, your:

  • Golden Rule kindness nurtures personal bonds with willing participants
  • Service excellence is carefully shown, with positive vibes
  • Seeds for valuable advocacy are planted, with residents and SLC decision-makers

In addition to consistently imparting knowledge in structured forums, breakthroughs can be achieved by tapping into residents’ affinity for their tried and true favorites.

Simply ask Activity Directors, Wellness or Nursing Directors what one of their residents’ most popular events is and inevitably (yes, even in this day and age…), the answer will be BINGO. See you next week for fun and games!
