Jewish Renaissance Medical Center Hosts Student Workshop at
Malcolm Shabazz High School in Newark through
March of Dimes Grant
Newark, New Jersey - June 2, 2015:
Thanks to the March of Dimes, the Jewish Renaissance Medical Center's Newark School-Based Health Centers was awarded funding to implement the
Empowering
Sisters Project; a program designed to enhance critical thinking skills associated with pre-, inter- and post-conception health for African-American teenage girls.
This one-day event will take place on Tuesday, June 2nd, at Malcolm X Shabazz High School with 100 student participants.

About the Empowering Our Sisters Project
The March of Dimes grant funded two high school programs; this is the second part of the series. The first part took place at Central High School on June 6, 2014. The core workshop objectives are:
- to address the physical and social risks of teen pregnancy
- how to avoid becoming pregnant
- should young ladies become pregnant, have an understanding of the responsibilities of proper nutrition and healthcare for both themselves and their unborn child
- address the components of Preconception Care
- address the importance of vitamins, especially the importance of Folic Acid in supporting a full term delivery
- discuss the importance of vaccinations
- how to stay healthy during and after pregnancy
Event Day The program is set to run from 9am-2:30pm that will entail Keynote Speaker, Johanna Wright, 30 year resident of South Orange, with 30 years experience as a teacher, coach, mentor and advisor in the South Orange / Maplewood School District. Workshops themes are based on March of Dimes curriculum, Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait and Teen Pregnancy Prevention. "We are excited to be partnering with the March of Dimes and Malcolm X. Shabazz High School in providing this high energy and engaging workshop," stated Jessica Rademaker, JRMC's Director of Newark School-Based Health Centers. "We thank the March of Dimes for not only providing the funding, but also the framework to guide the learning content and delivery for this important event."We also thank Shabazz High School's leadership and staff for working hand-in-hand with us to make this the most impactful day". |
