This issue marks seven full years of publishing our monthly newsletter. We now have over 1200 subscribers from all over the planet and one of the highest newsletter "open" rates in the country. Many of our readers have expressed their gratitude for the information we offer. This feedback motivates us to go more deeply and offer even better information.
In this issue of the Newsletter, we write about food myths and practicalities. Dr. Connie muses on food fads and nutritional fanaticism, then offers her thoughts on how vegetarians may be limiting their health options. Dr. Marcel writes about the health hazards with eating farmed fish; Dr. Brad dispels the myth that one diet can address everyone's needs; and Jane H. writes about the work she does in helping people achieve their health goals through a reprogramming of old concepts.

Food Fads and Fanaticism
This may be health food heresy, but
I'm not a fan of smoothies. That is not to say that I never partake of them or enjoy them, nor that I never prescribe them, nor that I do not find them useful in many circumstances. It is rather that I find facing a cold sweet drink morning after morning for breakfast, in general sugar content misguided, and, for me, boring.
You might describe me as an eclectic naturopathic foodie with strong guiding principles that bend with certain situational winds. (Dr. Marcel is probably wrinkling his brows at this and wondering what on earth I'm trying to say.)
Silicon Valley boasts an unusual environment. We are a learned and rather entitled people who can access just about anything we want, whether information on the amino acid substitutions in the milk from various species of cows, or on organic, ecologically, socially and politically correct products.
Sometimes, however, choices overwhelm and concepts fly in the face of practical necessity.
People literally come to us with phobias with regards to food. Seafood is contaminated with mercury, plant foods by GMO experimentation and pesticides, animal foods by hormones and antibiotics and inhumane rearing. The list is long in our sadly polluted world, but the fact is that we do live on this planet and we do need to drink the water, breathe the air, and eat the food that is available.
From time immemorial, people have faced times of feast and times of famine. In famine, it may be weeds and insects that sustain life. In emergency, we may well eat what we otherwise would not.
I often tell the story of a dear friend, a committed and life long vegetarian, with whom we travelled many years ago. Crossing a high Himalayan pass, ill equipped for the weather, he was lost and found nearly frozen in an icy snow drift. Nearby villagers rescued him, slew the village goat, prepared a stew and brought our friend back to life. Should he have stuck to his principles? I think not.
Less extreme, in our practice in Brattleboro, Vermont, we served a population of righteous macrobiotics. They were unfortunately not a healthy bunch. I stunned a member of the community at one point by writing a prescription for a trip down to Mocha Joe's for a cup of coffee and a chocolate chip cookie. Faced with the indignation of my patient,
I noted that the rigidity with which she held her concepts was far more damaging than a chocolate chip cookie could ever be.
It is certainly smart to know what foods agree with us and what foods do not, what choices are available to us and in what way our choices matter, where to draw lines (alcoholics should not touch alcohol, celiacs can not consume gluten) and where to cross lines.
We ideally learn to choose conscientiously and wisely. It is generally well to remember that guiding principles are guiding principles and that circumstances may cause deviation from those principles.
We do need to eat, and inevitably, in necessity, partake of imperfect foods. But we will still be ok.
As the Basque proverb goes: Filosofia baino hobea da oilo-zopa.

Farmed Fish:
What You May Not Know!

I spent most vacations during my early years fishing in Long Island Sound with my family. There were so many fish we would bait two hooks on one rig and bring up two fish with each cast.
The bottom of our rented wooden boat quickly filled with porgies, flounder, fluke, snapper, blowfish and others. The seawater was so clear you could see crabs scuttling along on the sand bottom many feet below. There was no plastic refuse and other discards of civilization to be seen anywhere. In the evening after a day on the sea we would eat fresh fish until we were stuffed. What we didn't eat, we froze and enjoyed at future meals. We had no worry about contaminated fish. We knew that we were getting pure, unadulterated protein. Not so these days.
Pollution from a staggering number of sources has turned one of the healthiest foods on the planet into one of the most contaminated.
Although fish farming has been around for centuries, modern fish farming practices have produced one of the most toxic foods on the planet. In addition to contamination from industrial pollution, farmed fish are also fed a concoction of pesticides, antibiotics and other drugs.
Then there is the matter of Frankenstein fish. Farm-raised fish tend to develop a number of mutations, probably linked to the DNA-changing pesticides used to combat sea lice and other pests. Research shows hat an astounding fifty percent of farmed fish are deformed. And there is more...
Most people know that toxins accumulate in body fat. While wild-caught salmon is about six percent fat, farmed salmon may have as much as 35 percent fat! More fat means a greater toxic load. In fact, a researcher in Norway has determined that farmed salmon is up to five times more toxic than any other food he has ever tested!
Although the pesticides and drugs are major contaminants, the greatest source of contamination are the protein-rich dry pellets farmed salmon are fed. The pellets are primarily composed of desiccated fatty fish that are deemed unfit for human consumption due to the extremely high level of contamination in their flesh. To keep the pellets from oxidation and quickly spoiling, a Monsanto-invented pesticide called ethoxyquin is added to mix. Ethoxyquin is banned in Europe because it has been discovered that it has the ability to cross the blood brain barrier, and may have carcinogenic effects.

iven the stunning amount of data on the hazards of eating farmed fish, why do we still have fish farms?
Is it all about money? So what can we do? The answer is not wild-caught fish, Most wild-caught fish now suffer from some degree of contamination, due to widespread environmental pollution. Mercury, heavy metals, and chemicals like dioxins, PCBs, and agricultural chemicals enter the oceans via major waterways and are deposited in the flesh of wild fish.
Fortunately, there are still some wild-caught options whose benefits outweigh the potential hazards. Wild-caught Alaska salmon, sardines and anchovies have very low levels of contamination and are rich in Omega-3 oils and other health-promoting nutrients.
The most contaminated wild fish include whales, sharks, swordfish, tilefish, and king mackerel. The chart below gives expanded information.

Fish Oil, Glandulars
and Collagen Protein

I personally have defined myself as primarily vegetarian, though I've come to question whether I should define myself as anything, food wise. Vegetarian has come to mean ovo lacto vegetarian, which isn't really vegetarian. There are then the ovo lacto pescatarians, who also aren't really vegetarians. And what about those who indulge in organic poultry here and there? And how can you be vegetarian on moral grounds if you wear leather shoes and silk clothing? Is this about principles, preferences, convenience? And
where do our food principles and preferences intersect with our health?
Many of our clientele at Pacific Naturopathic, like me, define themselves as vegetarians. Their healing, however, sometimes requires non vegetarian solutions. A primary example of a non vegetarian solution is the use of fish oil as a source of Omega 3 fatty acids. While Omega 3 fatty acids are found also in flax seed, in hemp seed and in walnuts, the oils in these plant foods must be transformed to be effective. Omega 3's are dosed according to the content of
eicosopentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA), and these are not preformed in the vegetarian sources. One can find small amounts of these active constituents in algae, but the cost for effective dosing is approximately tripled, as is the number of pills required.
Therapeutic doses of EPA and DHA treat mild to moderate depression, function as anti inflammatories, lubricate joints, stabilize tissue, favorably affect lipid profiles, and more. Old time barnyard eggs contained a certain amount of EPA and DHA. Cartons of hen house eggs now boast the addition of these essential fatty acids (not sure where they come from, though). Range fed meats contain these fatty acids, stockyard meats do not.
Glandular products are another case in point. In hunting/gathering societies, the glands were the prize of the kill.
In some mysterious fashion, consumption of glands trains glands to function more effectively. Adrenal support products most often contain glandulars, as do thyroid su
pport products. (Natural thyroid products such as Naturthroid are glandulars which contain hormones as well as the glandular itself.) While we have nonglandular products to support the glands, quite often it is the glandular product that works the magic.
A third example is found in the burgeoning use of bone broths. I cant argue the fact that these broths contain a wealth of nutrients and restorative substances. Having sustained a recent shoulder injury which did not respond to anti-inflammatory fish oil and glucosamine sulfate (often from shellfish, by the way), I came to the joint sustaining properties of collagen. While my vegetarian stomach rebelled at consuming it the bone broth way, the Bulletproof Executive came to my rescue with a tasteless, odorless collagen powder that dissolves easily in what other than my morning Bulletproof coffee. No One Diet Fits All People

One of my personal pet peeve's which I think applies to most of us centers around so-called experts and dietary advice or "scientific evidence." There is no one-size-fits-all diet due to normal human development and biological individuality. This simply means that as we age and change our diet will need to change. Just because a diet is good for someone else does not mean it's good for you and even a diet that was once good for you will likely not always be good for you. This should be common sense and is definitely my clinical experience but due to so many strong opinions, and the marketing nature of our society, confusion abounds.
I, like many naturopathic doctors, like to occasionally run a food allergy and sensitivity blood test to see which foods are causing a strong reaction in the immune system. We also like to occasionally do an elimination diet consisting of a fast or very restrictive diet for up to six weeks in order to determine problematic foods. Benefits will often include less inflammation, better digestion, improved skin and brain function and sometimes a complete resolution of an illness.
I believe that it is a myth and misleading to think there is one ideal diet food for you. I like to use the example of Bill Clinton and his famous vegan diet. Bill did a year of a vegan diet when he was overweight, red-faced and puffy with obvious inflammation and dietary over indulgences. After a year of a strict healthy vegan diet he completely resolved his issues. However, a thin female teenage vegan would often do poorly to continue this approach. And may do better on a Paleo type diet for a while.So it depends on who you are and what's happening in your life.

About What to Eat

How and what to eat is not my area of expertise so there won't be any opinions about that.
What I DO have knowledge about is the mind in relation to food. What I DO know is that there is a way that you can lose weight and feel good in your body without having to deprive yourself. And oh, by the way, you'll also get your stress and self-sabotage in check. What's not to like?
We already have enough stress in our lives so body image and weight just adds more. When we feel that our weight has gotten to be too much we tend to avoid social situations where we might be judged.
The irony of weight gain is that we make ourselves "smaller" as we increase our size. We avoid being in photos or get very upset when, suddenly, our clothes are too tight and we don't want to be seen.
So, our reaction is usually to go on a diet and join a gym. But, as you know, both of
those worthy ventures often end up by the wayside. So what's a body to do?
Well, there is hope and it's about becoming the boss of you. Wouldn't that be nice?
The thing to notice first is the life-long beliefs you have about yourself. I'm not good enough...I'm not attractive...My whole family is big so why try? These limiting beliefs dominate so we need to get down to their roots and transform them. We can create a new way of thinking and feeling that is not a struggle.
So how is that done?
Well, if neuroscientists estimate that 95% of our lives are determined by the subconscious mind then that is what we have to change.
In effect,
we need a coup d'état of the subconscious to put new beliefs in charge. That is where
EFT Tapping and Hypnosis shine like nothing else can.
There is no better way to access the subconscious mind than by using these modalities. That is why I have made a specialty of using both in my sessions. I call them the Dynamic Duo because it is a two punch knockout of limiting beliefs.
It is a scientific fact that that the human brain focuses on negative outcomes more than positive ones because we have evolved that way for protection. Is there a tiger in the bush? I better not take anything for granted because it could be there (whether it is or not).
So, this creates stress and that releases a hormone called cortisol which causes weight gain. How? Well studies have linked it to increased appetite, sugar cravings and, worst of all, additional abdominal fat - the bane of us all!
Both EFT and Hypnosis help you enter into the relaxation response by disrupting the stress response. That supports weight loss in addition to generating a more positive state.
But the most important part is subconscious re-programming. This begins the BIG life changes by laying down new beliefs.
And when you change your old self-defeating beliefs...you change your whole life.

Breast Thermography at

When the "hormonal grade" is high on breast thermography reports, it is an indication that estrogen stimulation of the breasts is high. Patients sometimes then feel like they should avoid estrogenic foods, soy being high on the list. In actuality, the plant estrogens in estrogenic foods, (the list is long, with flax seed and soy products topping the list), are far weaker than our own human estrogens.
These plant estrogens compete for binding sites with human estrogens, lowering estrogen when estrogen is high, and providing an estrogenic influence when estrogen is lacking.
Of much more concern than the plant estrogens are the hormones used in raising animal produce, and consumed when we drink those conventional milks, or eat the meat of caged chickens and other feedlot animals. In addition, the unintentionally and inescapably imbibed xeno estrogens from innumerable sources in our chemically contaminated environment are major contributors to disrupted hormonal levels in human breast tissue.
In women who are being treated for breast cancer with aromatase inhibitors and other medicines designed to lower estrogen levels, we can compare a thermography report pre treatment with a therm report during treatment. Changes in the vascularity of the breast tissue are evaluated to determine efficacy of treatment.

There are even figs when the birds don't get them first. And who knew that that innocuous sapling was a species of peach tree bred to tropical weather?
What could provide better eating than seasonal, local, organic food, ripe for the picking? Even better than farm to table, these foods are often farm to mouth, never making it quite so far as the table. We recently became aware of a 3 week retreat program being offered specially for cancer patients this summer in the Sierra Nevada near Nevada City at the Ananda Village Meditation Retreat. The retreat was designed by and is being led by a Yoga Therapist.
It is designed for adults over the age of 24 who have undergone chemo or radiation treatments in the last 10 years; for people struggling with the effects of the illness or the side effects of treatment; for those wanting tools to create and maintain health, well being, and inner peace and joy.

Increased Physical Activity Associated with Lower Risk of 13 Types of Cancer

A new study of the relationship between physical activity and cancer has shown that
greater levels of leisure-time physical activity were associated with a lower risk of developing 13 different types of cancer. The risk of developing seven cancer types was 20 percent (or more) lower among the most active participants (90th percentile of activity) as compared with the least active participants (10th percentile of activity). These findings, from researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and the American Cancer Society, confirm and extend the evidence for a benefit of physical activity on cancer risk and support its role as a key component of population-wide cancer prevention and control efforts. The study, by Steven C. Moore, Ph.D., NCI, and colleagues, appeared May 16, 2016, in JAMA Internal Medicine.
This new study pooled data on 1.44 million people, ages 19 to 98, from the United States and Europe, and was able to examine a broad range of cancers, including rare malignancies. Participants were followed for a median of 11 years during which 187,000 new cases of cancer occurred.

Tumor biopsies are an essential part of cancer care. They can confirm a cancer diagnosis, identify the cell type of the tumor, and, increasingly, they are used to determine whether a patient's tumor contains particular genetic alterations that may make them candidates for targeted therapies.
However,
tumor biopsies require invasive procedures, including surgery, and some patients may not be candidates because of poor health or because of a tumor's location in the body. In addition, after the initial testing and analyses of biopsy samples, not enough additional tissue may be left for comprehensive molecular profiling, or it may not be of sufficient quality for profiling.
To overcome these barriers to gathering genetic information about a patient's cancer, researchers have developed technologies for capturing and analyzing DNA and other types of genetic material released by tumor cells into blood.
In the largest study of its kind to date, a test that assesses DNA mutations and other changes in genetic material shed from tumors into the blood-a so-called liquid biopsy-produced results highly similar to those of traditional tumor biopsies.

genomic changes identified by the test in a large collection of patient blood samples largely matched patterns of genetic changes seen in large tumor biopsy

And in a cohort of nearly 400 patients with several types of common cancers, in most cases the test identified the same mutations in the patients' blood samples as were seen in their tumor biopsy samples. The liquid biopsy also identified mutations that are linked to treatment resistance but that had not been detected in the original tissue biopsy.
