Food Gift Card Program

In November of 2023, DOORWAYS was presented with the opportunity to help distribute $100,000 in food voucher cards to clients through the Ryan White Case Management system which is the largest federal program focused exclusively on providing care and treatment services to people living with HIV. The Food Voucher program was structured to first address the needs of those with monthly incomes below the 2023 Federal Poverty Level (FPL) of $1,215/month or $14,580/year, and then in a second wave provide food voucher cards to families with monthly incomes up to $2,430 a month and in a third wave to families over 201% FPL. By December 1, 2023. The agency received over 700 referrals and exhausted all the funding. In mid-January 2024 an additional grant of $100,000 was received and Wave 2 opened. More than 900 referrals were received within one week. The funding was exhausted before staff could open up referrals to families in Wave 3.

In total, more than 1,500 referrals were submitted. The program provided $150 worth of vouchers per household. Households of two were allotted $300 worth of food vouchers. All in all,1,333 food voucher cards were distributed to 1,055 clients.

Staff administrating the program, aided by two dedicated volunteers, diligently made more than 2,000 calls to the clients who had been referred to the program. Due to client scheduling challenges and the sheer volume of cards needed to be given out, DOORWAYS staff extended their availability during the process by working a few evenings and weekends.

As part of the application process, clients who participated in the Food Voucher Program were asked to complete a food insecurity assessment survey consisting of five questions designed to help staff formulate a better understanding of the issues that currently exist in the community. Many clients shared stories of experiencing food insecurity and many expressed their gratitude for this unexpected and badly needed assistance.

Volunteers at DOORWAYS

As we approach National Volunteer Month coming up in April we wanted to take some time to talk about some of our current volunteer activities and some future activities that are being planned.

The Jefferson Avenue Campus has been lucky enough this month to have a volunteer, Joel, through the United Way Volunteer Program who chose to take time off from his regular job and spent the week helping to spruce up the campus, doing paint touchups, cleaning windows, and helping with some trash cleanup around the Mama/Kaya property.

On February 29th, Leap Day, Cooper House was visited by Phoebe, a student from Crossroads College Prep School’s Fifth Day Program. Phoebe is a second-generation volunteer for DOORWAYS, as her mother also volunteered with DOORWAYS. During her community service time, Phoebe shared with the residents a fun “frogtastic” origami activity that had them jumping with excitement. DOORWAYS is lucky to be able to engage with various student volunteers throughout the year, not only does this time satisfy their own educational needs and help to create community involvement, but generates positive energy for the staff and residents they encounter during their time volunteering.

The Youth Group from the First United Methodist Church of Durant-Caddo in Oklahoma was in St. Louis this past weekend volunteering at various places in the area and they spent part of their time at DOORWAYS. During their two-evening visit to Cooper House, members of the group and their chaperones played games with residents that included UNO and Connect Four, singing, and helping to construct and decorate Easter cards.

Individual and group volunteers, corporate groups, and faith groups who spend their time volunteering with DOORWAYS and give back to their community create a sense of self-purpose and generate a positive impact for both themselves and those they interact with.

COMING UP:

The Friends In Deed group is preparing for their annual spring clean-up and planting in the Giudici-Tinlin/St. Louis AIDS Memorial Garden at Cooper House on Saturday, April 13. During their clean-up last year they added two new Japanese Maples and several perennials to help create a tranquil and welcoming space for residents of Cooper House and guests. ALTBALL...An evening of unconventional fashion benefitting DOORWAYS

Part gallery party, part fashion show, part underground ball--ALTBALL is designed to showcase how something fabulous can flourish when the basics are covered.....

Join DOORWAYS Friends In Deed for an evening of unconventional fashion on Thursday, May 16th at the Contemporary Art Museum.

The inaugural theme is Beauty From The Basics: A celebration of all that can flourish when the basics are covered. Simple necessities are often overlooked. Small comforts can mean so much to someone seeking stability. Housewares, personal care items, and objects that make a house a home. These objects can take on outsized importance to a life in transition. For many, they act as the building blocks to realizing their greater potential.

ALTBALL reimagines these supplies, turning them into dynamic and avant-garde fashions. Designers, artists, dancers, drag queens, and ballroom legends will showcase creations on the runway while raising funds for DOORWAYS’ programs. Special performances by the Divas of the Grove and TENS Ballroom Experience will elevate the ALTBALL runway to a truly unique spectacle.

Tickets are available starting at only $30 at www.ALTBALL.org — this event will sell out quickly so get your tickets today!

Thank you to our current sponsors: Lewis Rice/Design Luxury, MyHouse Painting Company, Legacy Dental Care, Neiman Marcus, Kim Bouldin-Jones & Mike Reardon, Keith Thompson & Don Foster, and Michael Brave.
