Sculpture trio installed in Flossmoor Park

There's a new splash of color at the southeast corner of Flossmoor Park! On Wednesday, May 15, Chicago-based artist William O'Brien and his crew installed three related sculptures at Brassie Ave. & Flossmoor Road: Blue Moon, The Purple Rising, and Spine, Spindle, Heart. These vibrant, powder-coated steel sculptures were made from reclaimed metal that survived a fire in O'Brien's studio in 2012. He says to him they are a symbol of triumph and renewal. Stop by and see them to make your own interpretation. Thank you to this generous artist, and thank you to the Flossmoor Public Art Commission, the Flossmoor Public Works Department and the H-F Park District for making this possible! Coming soon: Hubert Phipps' Paradise is scheduled to join Ballantrae Park this Friday, May 24!

This is a brief summary of approvals, action and discussion items from the May 20 Flossmoor Board of Trustees' meeting. It is not the official minutes of the meeting — those will be posted online here once approved at a future meeting.

Learn more about the Flossmoor Board of Trustees here...

  • Trustees approved the appointment of a new Commissioner for the Flossmoor Green Commission: Haley Henning. Henning is a Flossmoor resident and co-owner of Wild Plum, an ecological landscaping company. She was appointed to serve a three-year term.

  • Through the consent agenda, the Board approved three items, including meeting minutes, accounts payable and a resolution between the Village and Cook County. They can be viewed here...

  • Finance Director Ann Novoa and Mike Wojcik of The Horton Group presented on insurance renewals for Village employees. Although insurance rates are up nationally, Flossmoor's increase for 2024-25 was less than what was budgeted. The board voted unanimously to approve the recommendations.

  • A discussion was held regarding a potential liquor license for Tower Tasting Room, a prospective wine business from William Hightower for Downtown Flossmoor. The Board is excited about this business coming to fruition and unanimously directed the Village to craft a liquor license for this specific use.

Cicada Season is Here

The long-awaited cicadas are here, there and everywhere in Flossmoor, but remember: there is no need to spray them away! Cicadas won’t harm you, your pets (except maybe some stomach distress from overeating), your mature trees, flowers or plants. In fact, the U.S. EPA Great Lakes Region says that cicadas can actually help your garden, because they can aerate lawns and improve water filtration. A reminder from Homewood Disposal: please do not place cicadas or their shells in with your recycling or yard waste. They recommend composting them at home or placing them in your garbage can.
