E&E News: We've Got Your Sea-Level-Rise Studies Right Here
A recent
E&E News article on sea level rise research featured interviews with FCI scientists
Andrea Dutton (UF) and
Ben Kirtman (UM), as well as the
Eyes on the Rise tool developed at FIU. The article was in response to a senior White house official's comment expressing interest in reviewing studies on sea level rise and potential impacts to the U.S.A.

Tiffany Troxler (FIU) to Join NASEM Committee on Carbon Dioxide Removal
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has appointed a committee of experts, including
Tiffany Troxler (FIU), to conduct a study on Developing a Research Agenda on Carbon Dioxide Removal and Reliable Sequestration. This study will develop the agenda needed to assess the benefits, risks, and sustainable scale potential for CDR and sequestration approaches and increase their commercial viability.

Warm Water Rings Fueling Hurricane Intensification in the Caribbean Sea
Last year's devastating Hurricane Matthew may be one of example of a tropical storm fueled by massive rings of warm water that exist in the upper reaches of the Caribbean Sea. In a recent study, a team at the University of Miami deployed 55 aircraft ocean instruments to measure ocean temperature, salinity, and currents to understand the structure of these warm-water eddies.

What Climate Change Means for Leaf Litter
According to a study co-authored by
John Kominoski (FIU), temperature is not the only factor in how quickly insects and micro-organisms convert food into energy and, as a byproduct, release carbon dioxide into the air via leaf litter decay. This finding contradicts a long-held belief that this process would accelerate with rising temperatures.

Is Climate Change Producing Too Many Female Sea Turtles?
A recent
news article published in
Scientific American features a new method developed by
Jeanette Wyneken and colleagues at FAU to identify the gender of sea turtle hatchlings. Warmer temperatures may lead to an increase in female turtles, and a skewed gender ratio could affect the future of the species.
