Happy 45th Birthday KVMR- Flashback Friday Edition

It’s KVMR’s Birthday TODAY!

KVMR’s been sharing the air with friends and neighbors for 45 years in a row, and it’s a milestone to be celebrated! What started as a bunch of dreamers spinning records in a shack on top of a mountain has grown into the responsible adult our community needed. When fires flare or power goes out, KVMR is ready to spring into action to keep you safe and informed. Meanwhile, at heart, we’re still a bunch of goofy kids who love music. If KVMR brings a little joy to your life, celebrate our birthday with us and get a special limited-edition KVMR birthday tee-shirt by local artist and longtime deejay, Jerianne Van Dijk. She beautifully reprised a vintage classic from the KVMR archives.

And—BONUS!—Tune in for live WorldFest broadcast, today and all weekend long.

Thanks to KVMR members for the last 45 years. It takes money to provide something this excellent for free, and KVMR members get it. We love you KVMR family, here’s to 45 more years of magic on the air!

Get yer dang tee-shirt before they're all gone!

Vintage 20th Bday Tee by George Parsons

George Parsons was an original KVMR deejay and the Music Director for years. His beautiful, illustrated style influenced KVMR's artistic sensibilities for decades. Big thanks to George, who played a big part in why KVMR is so cool, and KVMR still being around today!

Jerianne Van Dijk has reprised the classic- get it while you can!

Local artist and longtime deejay, Jerianne Van Dijk, reprised the vintage birthday tee-shirt to celebrate 45 years of making our community a better, more informed and more fun place! Dreams really do come true! Photo by Larry Miller.

KVMR & KVMRx Meet In The Middle

Leave it to seasoned broadcaster Hap Hazard to pass the mic, here with KVMRx's 21st Century Girl. They’re in different studios at the same time, and are building a friendship passing in the hall every week. KVMR started a hyper-local station at 105.7 in Grass Valley & Nevada City (worldwide kvmrx.org), to make space on more airwaves for more voices. Community radio is as much about inclusion and belonging as it is about music, and that’s why it’s the best!

Miss Jiff - Born To Broadcast

Daddy Michael Ben and Baby Jiff, c. '81. Michael Ben co-hosted KVMR's Native American music show, Dreamwalk, for a decade, and invited little Miss Jiff to sit in regularly. Jiff switched gears and created Resilience Radio nearly a decade ago. She's a silver-tongued inspiration to many and second generation KVMR broadcaster who has been involved with radio since before she was involved with radio! She captions the photo: "Mom made us matching outfits. I was soooo cute before life crusted me over." She's just pulling legs, she's even cuter now!

The Succulent Might Be The Youngest Broadcaster Ever On KVMR!

This little cutie has been on the air since he was a twinkle in his mother Prickly Pear's eye. Just had to include a shot of him eating cake on his first Bday! Another second generation broadcaster. I guess the radio bug is hereditary!

Good Morning Jerianne Van Dijk!

Jerianne worked at Good Morning Foods in the 70's. "It was there on Broad St. It was the only organic health food store-- where Fur Traders is now and was Indian Springs, where I also worked for 11 years. I oughta own that building!" Jerianne Van Dijk has worn 1000 hats at KVMR-- emcee, morning show host, even board president-- now she hosts Under The Influence with Todd Wahoske, third Wednesdays, 8-10PM.

This little fella is so cute it makes my teeth hurt. When stress rears, I can just look at his adorable little face and think, "who's a good boy?!!" Naturally his favorite program is Road Dog Radio.

Fun fact: "His" name is Toby, or maybe it's Ziggy. Also, maybe he's a she. Their person lives in New Mexico and listens to KVMR on the web.

Meet Jasper, a 3 year-old bearded dragon. His favorite programs are Resilience Radio and The Flea Market. In this picture he’s sitting on the couch watching his humans decorate the tree for winter solstice. One of his favorite activities is supervising all daily activities outside on the homestead. I bet Jasper is real taskmaster-- he even got his hoomans to make him a little hat!

Send your pet's photos to petpinups@kvmr.org! KVMR's Pet Pin-Up Calendar is back for 2024! KVMR wants photos of your furry, scaly, shedding, little fleabags for one super-cute calendar. Because even bad dogs are good girls! Do a photoshoot or use an old one--your pets can be living or dead.

Charles Atthill at the time of KVMR's birth-- and quite old enough to be KVMR's father. He was then a university academic. He's now celebrating five years as a KVMR broadcaster, hosting Classics Declassified, Standard Deviations, Jazz Workshop, and Blues Spectrum. Still an over achiever!

*Just kidding-- passport!

Peaceniks in the Park

Groovin' On Cloud Nine

David James, of Groove Café, says “We are the happiest people in the world at that moment. It was 1988 and we had just become pregnant with our first son. There were Tiki torches all over the yard, and all our friends were there, and we were on cloud nine. That baby just got engaged!"

He Digs It!

Cy Musiker, of KVMR's Curtain Call, helping to dig the Cape Cod Canal a few decades ago. Curtain Call is a monthly show highlighting the month's best in arts & culture in the foothills, the valley, and occasionally beyond. Catch the latest edition HERE.

This photo of Eldon Wood was submitted by Laura Miller. Eldon was the engineer who moved KVMR's studio to the American Victorian Museum, from the shack on Banner Mountain. Rick Snelson still hosts Hard Country, alternate Saturdays 12-2PM. After Rick lost a large portion of his tongue in 2007, Audra Snelson has joined as a cohost. They have one of KVMR's longest running and beloved shows! Many thanks to the Snelsons!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM NFCB's 2023 COMMUNITY MEDIA CONFERENCE

KVMR was represented at the 2023 NFCB Community Media Conference in Denver this month! This national conference brings together more than 200 community stations from around the country to sow the seeds of connection, absorb knowledge, question our practices, and find creative solutions to elevate our service.

Powerful keynote speaker, Dr. Dwinita Mosby Tyler,  engaged us in new ways to frame conversations and strategies for placing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) at the center of our work. Spoken word artist, Phil Kaye fired us up with his poetry performance art to remind us of the power of words– literally the currency of our radio endeavors.

General Manager, Ali Lightfoot led a session on public safety and how to train and prepare for emergencies, sharing case studies and listener feedback from KVMR’s coverage and response to storms, fires and power outages.
