Five for Five

September 2024

Five of the Top Stories at Five Counties this month!

Helping Families Get Ready for School

The first-ever Ready for School events held last month at Five Counties sites in Peterborough and Cobourg (photo above) proved to be helpful for families whose children with disabilities or exceptionalities are starting school for the first time this fall.

Discover the 6 F-Words of Child Development

If you hear F-words being used at Five Counties, it’s a good thing. The 6 F-Words of Child Development are something by which we swear, since they speak to the strength and abilities of the whole child.

The 6 F-Words of Childhood Development focus on six key areas of a child’s health and wellbeing. Inspired by decades of research, the framework moves us from a medical model of “fixing” kids to a strength-based approach that promotes health and development using all aspects of a child’s life.

This holistic approach to development is being used by Five Counties in its work assisting children with physical, developmental and communication challenges. As our Occupational Therapist Ashley Parsons explains, the 6-Fs can help address a child’s unique needs and goals for treatment, leading to better outcomes for everyone!

Gimme 5: Your Story is Our Story

Boy holding up Share Your Stories booklet

Five Counties is marking its 50th anniversary in 2025 and wants people to share their memories and moments of the Centre.

The Centre is launching its Gimme 5: Your Story is Our Story appeal to encourage current and former clients, families, staff, volunteers, board members, donors and community supporters to share any recollections they have of the Centre. The Gimme 5 Story Package makes it easy to share stories, as it includes several questions to help prompt people.

Anyone who has a story or memento to share can also email 50@fivecounties.on.ca or call 1-888-779-9916, ext. 200.

Your Input Matters! Thanks for Taking Part

Visual showing results from Family Engagement survey

We appreciate the dozens of individuals who took part in our Client and Family Experience Survey this past spring.

The survey is useful for Five Counties Children’s Centre as a snapshot in time to see how we are doing and where we can improve. We value family input in a child’s treatment journey – and are pleased you feel treated as an equal partner too!
