Most of us find that it's much easier to stay motivated if you workout with other people and not just by yourself.  A training group creates accountability and consistency, both key factors in achieving your fitness goals.  The other benefit is it simply makes training more fun and enjoyable.  One of our goals is to provide a positive and supportive environment during our workouts.  Every season we have a Kickoff Social to break the ice and help you get acquainted with your coaches, mentors and fellow participants.  During the season there are plenty of opportunities to socialize before and after our workouts. At the end of every season we have a Potluck Social following our last workout to celebrate our success. Many participants have made lasting friendships and continue to exercise with their friends after completion of the program.  Our hope is that Fit-tastic will help you develop the habits, knowledge and support structure necessary make fitness a lifelong pursuit long after our last workout is completed.

Fit-tastic was started in the Fall of 2008 and we will be entering our 13th season this fall.  The program is designed for new runners and those relatively new to the sport who want to improve.

The program runs August 18th through October 26th (10 weeks).  Coach led training sessions are held on Monday and Wednesday nights at 6 PM.  Monday nights will rotate between the Alexander YMCA on Hillsborough St. and Capital RunWalk in Cameron Village.  Wednesday night sessions will be at various parks and greenways in the Raleigh area.

Within Fit-tastic we have three training groups:

  • Walk-to-Run
  • Walk/Run
  • Time Improvement

Our Walk-to-Run group is designed for those who have not run before or want to get back in shape.  The group begins with walking only sessions and gradually adds running intervals to the workouts.

The Walk/Run group is for those that have done some running but are currently lacking endurance.  Workouts will consist of walking and running intervals with the intent of building to all running before the end of the program.

Time Improvement is geared towards those who have completed a 5K and maintained a base level of fitness.  Early workouts are walk/run but will progress quickly to running only with the goal of improving speed.

Participants are welcome to move within groups at any time during the course of the program.

We strive to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for participants to continue maintaining a healthy lifestyle after the conclusion of our program.  Our goal is make fitness a lifetime endeavor, not just a 10 week program that ends with our target race.

After our Monday night workouts at the Alexander YMCA, staff will be leading short Abs & Ups workouts to introduce participants to the basics of core strength workouts.

We will be hosting the following clinics after our workouts at Capital RunWalk on the following topics:

  • Stretching and Foam Rolling
  • Nutrition & Hydration
  • Self Defense

The Alexander YMCA will also provide all participants with guest passes for up to 12 free visits.  This is a great way to learn about all the programs and benefits the YMCA offers.
