First UNC Student Volunteer Team Member Arrives in Palau
KnowledgeWell Health- UNC Volunteer Responds to NCD Needs in Pacific

A year ago, Executive Director Lisa McFarland CPA (UNC EMBA 2001) piloted KnowledgeWell's first university student volunteer program by mentoring a college student volunteering for the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) committee chaired by Billy Kuartei in Palau. The team provided accounting, operations and other business services to support the PIF (see slide rotation at www.knowledgewell.org homepage "President Reviews Student's Work").

The primary message and request from last year's PIF was solving the critical situation surrounding Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). KnowledgeWell student volunteer Meredith Hermann arrived in Palau last weekend to address this issue. Hermann, a MPH/JD candidate at UNC, has a passion for public health and legislative policies which improve the well being of communities.

KnowledgeWell's objective is to gain an understanding of the healthcare system from the Palau government and community health leadership as it pertains to non-communicable diseases, as well as to serve the Leadership in Palau and other nations with  their efforts to reverse the alarming trends throughout the Pacific.   With the support of other KnowledgeWell health volunteers and UNC, Hermann leads this national initiative for KnowledgeWell. She will analyze possible opportunities and solutions for Palauan leaders' consideration. KnowledgeWell will act on the indigenous leadership's decisions for next steps as it has for the past decade.

For more information about this project or replicating any of these solutions in your community, email info@knowledgewell.org with "Health NCD" in the subject line.
