Pastor's Corner

Friends,

Pentecost is one of my favorite days in the Church calendar. It is the day we remember and celebrate God's Spirit being poured out and the birth of the Church Universal. The story recorded in Acts tells of people from different places and speaking different languages understanding one another by the power of the Spirit.

A Pentecost experience I had was attending the anniversary service of the Canaan Korean United Methodist Church in Marina. The service was completely in Korean and the pastor warned me that translation would not be provided. Still, I wanted to show my support. Now, the Holy Spirit did not give me ability to understand or speak Korean, but the Holy Spirit did send a loving (and bilingual) member who chose to sit next to me to translate a little during the service so I felt included.

That was, for me, a mini Pentecost and a reminder of what the Spirit's work looks like - nudging us to widen our welcome, to be in community, and to find oneness in the midst of our diversity.

On Sunday we will celebrate the Spirit's working in and through First Church Roseville and prayerfully consider how the Spirit is leading us into the next year. I hope that you all can come to worship and stay for our potluck, where I will lead a discussion on our mission and hopes for the next appointment year.

Blessings,
