First Sunday After Pentecost,

May 26, 2024

8:00 a.m. & 10 a.m. Services

For Heroic Service

The Book of Common Prayer provides a prayer for Memorial Day. Under the heading “For Heroic Service,” we remember before God “with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy.” From their sacrifice comes a sacred responsibility: “Grant that we may not rest until all of the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines.”

It’s a subtle prayer, but one that convicts. I am unsure if I have gladly accepted the disciplines of true freedom, and remain unsettled that its benefits are equitably distributed, knowing I do too little to affect change. Still, I give thanks for those who have died before and those willing to bear the burden of service in such an unsettled world. This Sunday, in the prayers of the people, I urge you to have ready a name of one who serves or has served in that portion when we add names.

The Rev. Timothy Safford, Interim Rector
