From the Minister
Greetings All,
One of the most vital tasks a congregation in transition needs to accomplish during its interim is to uncover and understand its history. We will be doing this in two parts – each of which you have a starring role! So please come to any (or all) of the History Conversations (times listed below) as well as the FP Timeline Creation gathering later in February.
See you all soon for these engaging and fun exercises!
Peace,
Erin
1) History Conversations:
Sunday, February 4th 11:45(ish) to 1:30
Tuesday, February 6th 7:00 to 8:30 (on Zoom)
Ask for link.
Thursday, February 8th 7:00 to 8:30 (on Zoom)
Same as above
Sunday, February 18th 11:45(ish) to 1:30
Here are some questions to ponder: Describe a time when the congregation operated or performed really well. What were the circumstances? What was your part? How did you feel about it? What do you value most about this congregation? What activities or ingredients or ways of life are most important here? What are the best features? How has this congregation made a difference in your life? How has it affected you? Make three wishes for the future of this congregation.
2) FP Timeline Creation:
Sunday, February 25th 11:45 to 1:30 in the Sloop Room
We will be lining the Sloop Room with newsprint which will allow you to fill in important moments in the centuries of history that is FP. Some questions to consider: Who were the ministers, including the interim ministers, and what were terms of service? How about church staff? When were any congregational moves made, buildings burnt, and/or built? What were the membership numbers, using five-year increments, going back forty years? What were the annual
budgets in those years? How did the endowment rise — or fall? And more!
Peace,
Erin

Notes from the Music Director
Our theme for the month of February: Silence. We will experience 4’33” by John Cage. Cage conceived the piece in 1948, when he gave it the working title “Silent Prayer.” The work’s manuscript declared that it was not written, “for any instrument or combination of instruments.” It then specified that there were three movements of set duration—33 seconds, 2 minutes 40 seconds, and 1 minute 20 seconds, respectively.
For each movement, Cage’s sole instruction to the performer(s) was “Tacet” (Latin: “[it] is silent,” used in music to indicate that the musician is not to play.)
It quickly became one of the most controversial musical works of the 20th century because it consisted of silence or, more precisely, ambient sound—what Cage called “the absence of intended sounds.”
Choral Anthems this month:
February 4th-When Our Heart is In a Holy Place by Joyce Poley
“When we share the silence of sacred space”
February 11th-The Sound of Winter by Jay Althouse
“Silence is the sound of Winter” “Can you hear a snow-flake falling?” “Can you hear it
touch the ground?” “ Listen to the sound of winter……Mmm” ❄️
February 18th- The Sound of Silence by Paul Simon
“Hello darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again” The Narrator has no one to talk to and the only thing that understands him is the darkness and his own loneliness.
“In restless dreams, I walked alone - narrow streets of cobblestone.”
But the song reaches beyond the perspective of a single narrator, a flash of light, revealing a mass of people, humanity all seeking refuge in their own darkness and their own silence.
February 25th - NO CHOIR REHEARSAL OR ANTHEM
EARTH HARMONY - Singer/songwriter Christina and Bass player Ted will lead music on February 25th in my absence.
See you in Church,
Beth
